I can't believe that I haven't found this site till now. I was out at Hobuck last weekend and ran into another kayak that told me to look you guys up.
That was the first time I had fished out of Hobuck, ended up there b/c my girlfriend wanted to go surfing.

All I can say is WOW!! I caught more lingcod than ever had in any other single day. Probably 15. Mostly undersized but kept two nice keepers as well as two nice cabezon and a greenling. I wasn't able to find any Black rock fish but was more than giddy with my first attempt at fish out of Hobuck. I also had several inquisitive harbor seals and two porpoises join me while fishing.

I had such a blast that I am going back next weekend 8-28 and 29 and was hoping some others might be up for the fun.

Plus any tips on where or how to find the black rock fish would be awesome too.
Thanks,
Bill

Well, you found us now so all is well! Welcome to NWKA Fungunnin.

You'll learn a ton and meet some cool people I'm sure!

I'm sure a few here will have a few tips for Hobuck. Also, do a search at the forum page for "Hobuck". there's a few threads about that place.
See ya on the water..

Sounds like you had a great time. for what it is worth on my last trip all of the rockfish were caught within 50 feet of the rocks popping out of the water there. We also caught all the fish on the ocean side of the rock. We fished 2 days and although we fished on the east or the coast side of the rocks we never hooked a one on that side.  Another thing is to go south on the road from the hobuck beach resort for about 5 or 10 minutes. the next bay down has some great beach launching areas with similar rock structure to hobuck. There is a little house on the left where you put 5 bucks in a slot and then you can park right by the road. We were able to drive right on the beach to the water and it made launching easy. doug in seqim

All the ling I caught were on the inside of the rock pile. I found fighting the kelp too much of a hassle on the ocean side.
What were you fishing with? I was throwing a 4" white split tail plastic on a 3 ounce jig head.
Thanks,

Here is the post that shows the trip.
http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,4860.0.html

we used 3" white gulp mullet but we also threw some yellow scampi and they pretty much bit everything that wiggled. We threw at the rock sometimes even hitting it , pulled back , let it drop, reeled a bit and usually at least a hit. we did snag often but it was worth it.  have a blast this weekend.

the lower bay in the attachment was just as successful.

Fungunnin, that sounds like an awesome time. I might try to head up there for that weekend, but I have so much going on that I'm having trouble staying organized.
Hobuck's been sounding awesome for a combo surfin'/yakfishin' good time!

I probably should have gone to work instead of surfing yesterday. Glad I went surfing, though, since I had a good day and got some decent rides on some nice little waves. With offshore winds and temps going into the 70's here today, looks like I'm still suffering from the same addiction. Cancelled any work plans that tried to intrude, and already have my surfing stuff loaded up. Waiting for the tide to push in some more, since the surf is down to only a 3' swell this morning. Gonna hit it on the "high tide pump." Already checked out some little beach break peaks away from the main break, so I can avoid the crowd. Offshore winds and a clean little swell... (actually pretty small out there today) ... just right for an old has-been!

Anyway, I've been meaning to get up there!  Thanks for the report!

I'm not a surfer but my girl had a blast and would love to have some one else to hang out with in the water. Would be easy to go for a paddle in the morning, get some good fishing in then head back to catch some waves. Then back out to fish if you wanted. The rocks I fished off were a quick little paddle from the shore.

Aaaaa! don't think I'm going to make it this weekend! I've been dying to get up there!
I'm having trouble getting other people I know to coordinate with my plans. This sucks, since I almost always like my own ideas better than anyone else's, since I know what i like!  And there's never enuff time to do all those things you like!
Dang marine forecast here is forcing me to have to fish for Kings here on Friday afternoon, now, if I want to get out there at all.
I've been dying to get out in the Bay and see if they are biting yet, but its going to be too windy there for my boat this afternoon and thurs, according to the forecast. But Friday is looking to be good. Right now, the high tide change here is mid afternoon, and getting later every day. I fish the high tide change. Or the low tide change, if its not too low to get launched.

Hey, that other kayaker you met was me (Michael)!!! It was nice to have some company out there, the swells were getting a little too big for my liking. What a trip though! I ran into a huge bait ball right off the beach in about 10ft of water, had silvers jumping around my kayak down at Makah Bay (wasn't able to fish it for salmon because they closed Makah Bay for salmon fishing) and ended up with some nice lings.  I was camping down at the north end of the camp ground, let me know if you are going back out this weekend, I may make the drive back out there. Welcome to the forum!

I will definitely be out there this weekend. Would like to try fishing the second bay as well. It looks like there are some great rock piles that should be stuffed with fish. See you on the water!
