I looked at Google map for Neah Bay. It looks like there is a wall that extends to the small island. Does that wall block out the swells and waves? If so, is there any good fishing inside of that wall? I fish from a SIK and would like to try. ???
Being that it's right there in the harbor it gets hammered by all different kinds of people. I think the best you can get is some pile perch or flounder. Then again that's a pretty heavily used harbor so keeping anything out of there might not be advisable. The strait can be protected as long as the swell and wind cooperate. When they do there's lots of spots between Sekiu river and NB that don't get much pressure. Just look for the pullouts on the side of the road w/ access to the water. There's fish in and around those kelp beds.

I'm still considering a rockfish and ling hunt Saturday or Sunday.   It's looking like 10-15kt winds, and 7 ft. swell.  This looks doable to me, but I've never fished the Strait.

Right now here near Westport, we are getting a good swell pumping in: 7 feet @ 20 seconds.
I was hoping that it would be smaller, with less heavy hydraulic beatings required, so that I could take my ol' carcass out surfing. No heavy crunchers or suicide barrels for this ol' dog any more! :'(
I'm having to rearrange my tentative plans again. :P

Here's an idea: Tomorrow's forecast calls for light to moderate S winds here. Sounds good for a crack-o-dawn attempt at GH or Chehalis Coho.
Swell is still a little heavy, but a go-out along the N side of the S Jetty here will be do-able, for bottomfish.
For Saturday, forecast is for light winds becoming NW, which will also be OK for fishing the Harbor, and maybe the Jetty for the early morning high tide change before the wind comes up. The W swell is pumping  in thru the harbor entrance along the jetty, though, and its kind of bumpy and lumpy out there. (I'm not fishing there this weekend or tomorrow...I'm going after Coho if I go fishing).

That area falls within the Grays Harbor Control Zone, which closed to salmon angling on Aug 1st. If you want to fish for salmon in the Harbor (Coho only), you have to fish E of the Bouy 13 line, which runs N to S thru the green Bouy 13, which is in the channel just N of the blue observation tower on the N end of the Westport Marina. (The "groins" area is just E of this line, so you can fish for salmon off those rocks). The Boat Basin is open, too, but I haven't heard any decent reports from there yet.
Many boats that fish the GH Coho fishery launch from the Johns River WDFW ramp, which gets crowded and congested. You want to fish the tide changes in the Harbor for the best bite. Up river, its whenever they decide to bite (they are Coho!). Good reports have been coming from this fishery, so it will be crowded!
Lakes nearly everywhere are producing, and the C&R searun cutt fishing along the beaches in the Sound and Canal is pretty decent, now, too.
Thats the ConeHead local yokel outlook for now!  (Secret Squirrel spots omitted for security reasons. ;)

Hey Fungunnin, Did you make it out?  Been out of the loop, lost my pop last week.  I would like to hit the Ling once more before it closes, but there are silvers in my own backyard right now too.  Maybe this wkend.

Yes we made it out to Neah Bay this weekend. Had a great time fishing with TTM and Zee.
There are so many fish just out of Hobuck that it still makes me giggle. Saturday I must have hooked 30+ fish. No monsters but tons of fun. Kept two cabs two greenies and a 26" ling.
Sunday swell kicked up to full pucker level so I went inside and caught a PIG of a 26" cabezon just inside the harbor fishing the jetty.

Fun times all the way around and no rain!

OB, I feel for you. I lost my pop almost 16 years ago and every time I am out on the water with a line in the water it feels like he is there.

Lets get at least one more trip in the year. When does ling season end?

Plus I have a great "one that got a way" story to follow later with full report.

Nice FG, good pics, liked your filleting tips too.  Oct 15th is the end of it but I'm thinking silvers or Blackmouth this weekend at Freshwater bay, got lots of bottomfish in the freezer.
