Yep.More so for blacks, but the occasional underling will grab it, The large ones usually don't bother with such a small offereing.. I caught a black that was less then 7 inches today, cute little guy. It's a hoot when a nice sized black hits the light bait rod
See ya on the water..

Only problem with going from south cove to sunset is going against the wind. But it would save us from carrying the yaks up the trail. If i go, it will probably be in the evening. I think its supposed to be a little windy in the morning.

Im just going to wait and look at it before i decide. I have the less stable sit-in kayak, so it needs to be pretty flat out there.

Has anyone fished much there before? Is it worth the extra effort? Do you fish inside or outside of the reef?

I made it out at sunset tonight around 7. Fished till dark. Caught 2 20 inch lings, one keeper black, and a few smaller ones.  A couple were smaller than the jig i caught them on.

Merz, the south cove can be a great place to fish. Depending on the swell and wind direction the cove can be flat as paper when even sunset is torn up. The one bad thing about fishing the cove on a bad day; the area is small so if the fishing is slow you just committed your self to a long pack out for very little fishing. You basically have one little reef on the east side of the cove then a little rocky section on the west side with nothing but sandy bottom in between. Having said that though, the two times that I have packed the yak down there I have done very well and decided it was well worth the effort.
Enjoy the ride!

Thanks for the info! Ive been thinking about fishing south cove for a while. I fished commercially most of my life and have spent many nights anchored in south cove when the north wind was blowing. We used to party down there in high school also and ive spent a few nights passed out on the beach. My kayak is pretty light and i can carry it on my shoulder easily, so I dont think it would be too hard carrying it out. Ive seen people fishing off the sandy beach there before. Im guessing for surf perch. That be something else to try if there arent any fish on the rocks.
