I have yet to feel a need to have a smart phone.  ::) I'm a country boy, and don't have the exciting, busy life that you urban road warriors enjoy. I still attempt to reside in the ancient dark ages of a simpler time, and don't ever tweet, facebook, or link-in, or want to have to worry about an expensive smart phone. This site and one other fishing site are the only ones where I belong to a forum and post anything.
Also, I try to figure out all of my logistics on my home computer before I leave the house. I only use my phone to make necessary calls and texts.
I often keep it turned off, though, unless I'm on the road heading for a fishing hook-up, or something equally important.

I gotta admit, though, with everyone else rocketing into the future, and me still clinging with white knuckles to the flapping, trailing edge of low-tech, I'm feeling a bit neanderthal.  :banjo:

CHM, I'm not far ahead of you.  I don't Tweet, Facebook, use the phone to talk while on the water, etc... either.
I only stepped up to a smart phone due to eligibility with my Verizon contract.  If I was to ever do a smart phone it had to be waterproof, and rugged.  This fit the bill.

I have a smartphone provided to me by my employer but it has been somewhat dumbed down by them.   I can't use it to post on forums. If the phone was not provided and service paid for, I don't know if I would have one either.  The contract negotiated was to replace any malfunctioning phone for free no questions asked.  I am on my third Blackberry in the last year+.  Every once in awhile, one somehow gets wet.  :dontknow: I keep it in a drybag but every once in awhile you hook into a fish while you are on the phone and s*$t happens.

The one cell phone I pay to have service for is a Verizon phone purchased in 2004.  My wife carries it when she leaves the house.  She averages about 10 minutes per month.  We have a really cheap contract for 500 anytime minutes.  I guess I am a Luddite when it comes to telephones.  When my kids get old enough and I want to track their every movement, I will get a family plan and upgrade. :police:

i'm heading that way mice elf... next contract renegotiation with current carrier may actually be a termination in favor of a pay as you go account.

shitter, flackbook, all those "social" networking b.s. networks are a waste of time for me.

windoze is slowly heading out of my life in favor of a Linux distro.

was much happier with less "communication"

I don't have a smartphone, and don't really have a hankering for one. However, I urge you guys who do to buy products from a well known fruit company - I have been building machines for them non-stop for lately - and the OT is going to pay for some new toys.

Probably for her, though.

The dry pak products work really well, and despite what some people say, you CAN use a touch screen through them.

They also work in the rain, but you have to blow the water drops off first, or the touch screen will act funny.

Or you could get a waterproof smartphone like the Casio G'Zone.  Then, leash it.

+1  ;)

+2 ;D

and a leash is nice, but a float is better. damhik

I'm no technophobe, but I don't live on the bleeding edge either. As I said, the Commando works good for me! Forget facebook and twitter. But google earth, fishing buddy (fishing log) and tides sure are nice to have at hand.

They also work in the rain, but you have to blow the water drops off first, or the touch screen will act funny.

From a review of the commando:

"I was able to go online to weather.com and found out that it was raining reeeeeally hard. I had just a bit of trouble getting that page to come up though because the torrential rain hitting the touch screen kept sending me to other sites. "
