How does one target dogfish?

Pretty much throw anything to the bottom in Commencement Bay.  If you want to target shark there's a big crew of people in CA that target thresher shark AND you can keep/eat them.  Check out bigwatersedge.com and maybe plan a roadtrip down south

Don't even have to go to Cali.  They're up here too.  Granted you have to go a ways off shore to get to them, so you'd be mothershipping to yak fish for them.  Blue sharks too.  I hear of the albacore boats running into them occasionally.

Thresher is supposed to be excellent table fare.  Blues, if prep'd right too are supposed to be decent, though not as good as thresher.

Blue's have, from what I've read, very watery meat.  To make it edible I've read that you need to freeze it SOLID.  Then let it thaw completely in a bowl.  Drain off the collected water.  Then wrap in a towel and put it on a plate in the fridge for 12-24 hours.  The towel draws out the rest of the excess water and leaves you with a reasonably firm steak that can be cooked like any other white flesh fish.

It would be fun to catch one to find out first hand.

Salmon charters out of the WA ocean harbors regularly hook into blue sharks. They consider them a nuisance. I think its pretty cool tho, sharks are gorgeous and fun to fight. Dogfish excepted.

I've heard though that none of the charter boats will let you actually land a shark.  They don't want the liabilty if anyone, customer or crew, gets hurt.

there are sometimes blue sharks within a long kayak paddle from shore.

one time we were mooching for kings approx 3-4 miles of off hobuck.  my boat had a fish hold that filled with sea water and drained out on plane.  we were bleeding kings in the hold and the next king came up with just a head.  there was a clean bite that removed the rest of the fish.  we looked back and saw one blue shark finning on the surface about 50 feet behind the boat.  i had nothing rigged for sharks but i figured i should take advantage of it so i grabbed a fly rod rigged with a clouser (on an 8wt) and cast it towards the shark.  a couple strips later the fish was on.  unfortunately the line wrapped around the reel on the first run and the leader popped.  they eat flies and can almost be too easy with a chunk of bait.

sometimes that warm water moves in pretty close.  might be worth carrying a bag of dried chum just in case you find it.

Easy dogfish in the summer I have found are off Dash Point and right off the Westport wooden fishing pier.  One slow day in WP, I caught 4 or 5 of the darned things while crabbing with snares.  They gobbled up my little snares filled with fish parts.

I got a response back from WDFW regarding C&R for six-gill shark.

Here is my question:
Quote
The fishing pamphlet states that in MA 5-13, "SIXGILL shark may not be removed from the water."

An August 15, 2000 WDFW news release states, "The Department took action today to reduce the sixgill shark bag limit to zero in Puget Sound.  Catch and release fishing is still allowed under the new rule."

http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/aug1500a/

I can find no other references to recreational fishing for sixgill sharks in Puget Sound.  Can it be assumed that C&R recreational fishing for sixgill sharks in MA 5-13 is legal?

Here is the response minus the boiler plate:

The short answer to your inquiry is that fishing for Sixgill Sharks in Marine Areas 5 through 13 is completely closed. This information is listed in the Marine Area Rules for each of these Marine Areas, on pages 105 through 123. For Marine Areas 5, 6, and 7, the pamphlet states: WOLF-EEL, SIXGILL SHARK – CLOSED, while for Marine Areas 8-1 through 13, the pamphlet states: PACIFIC COD, POLLACK, HAKE, WOLF-EEL, SIXGILL SHARK – CLOSED.

If you happen to catch a Sixgill while fishing for other species, you are required to immediately release that fish, unharmed, back into the water. Also remember that it is unlawful to remove a Sixgill Shark from the water.

Thank you for clarity!  I will enjoy fishing for catch and release sturgeon.  I am curious though... they want you to report the tag on the shark if you catch one how are you supposed to do that if you must release it immediately?  smh
