I've only witnessed two get caught.  Both off the Westport jetty.  Both were caught vertically jigging from the jetty.  Literally.  My buddy lowers his jig into the crevices between the rocks and pulls out a really nice one.  He says certain species including small crabs are fished with a long pole with a few inches of line and a hook in Japan. Then he did it again a few days later.

It's referred to as "poke poling" down here.
