We were out off hobuck this weekend and were joking about how "scarce" the Cabby's were, we hooked more cabs than just about anything.  No joke, one after another, some big fat beast.
Do you mind telling me what you were using? I dedicated a couple months last year to trying and catching cabbies, and all I could pull up were a couple lings and a whole bunch of rockfish   :-[

They tend to live shallower than lings.  And in my experience they loooooove crags and overhangs and holes...i.e. the snaggiest structure.  Find the most severe structure on your finder and fish it (like high pinnacles).  They'll snap up that gulp shrimp like nobody's business.  but they like the grubs too.

+1

You can find them deep, but they really love nasty shallow areas (seriously, 15 feet deep) and will eat the hell out of berkely saltwater gulp.

I have found they like little movement and tight to the rocks. Be ready to loose a ton of gear! Dark colors seem to do best for me.

I was about to post this in 'Side discussions ORC' when I noticed this going on.
Thank y'all and keep the info coming!

''Crash coarse for a newb?''
There are a few of us on site who need input on rods/reels, line test, and lures, etc.
I wanna have the correct gear when I arrive at the ORC.
Beginners luck begins with offering the proper presentation.
I need some help!

Thank you,
Grant

Haha, I was wondering where my post went. Sorry for the thread jack :-[ ....if they can be found 15 ft., I should just be free-diving for them. I will have to try the gulp shrimp.

Thanks for the responses!

Grant,
What have you been fishing with? Better yet, do you have any salt gear at all? ( helps the helpers give tips)

You are going to laugh but the one and only cabezon I have ever caught (last Thursday in the greater Neah Bay area) was caught using chicken parts and a crab trap. :)

We had dropped a couple of crab pots on the off chance of getting a few dungies. When we pulled the pot it had one nice fat little cabbie in it.

Did you check the stomach of the cab? I bet it had fresh crab in it. Crab ate the chicken parts ... Cab ate the crab.

I've always done well with small scampies.in the shallow water I went ahead and dug up sand worms and sine clam. Killed em at double bluff. The only thing I hate aboit cabezon is the wicked thick bones,  and the head to meat ratio is crazy. 15 Bob caby had abiut 4 lb of meat. .. but wow they are tasty.and ugly.....

Jigs tipped with squid work good!

Abalone guts are a favorite bait for cabs too.

I think the cabezon is one of the most beautiful creatures around.   :)
