Made it out for my "Intro to Sturgeon" with Deepcolor yesterday morning.  Fortunately, he lent me his best sturgeon set-up, which coupled with a bit of beginner's luck, resulted in a very nice hookup, a bit of a sleigh ride, and boating this nice keeper size sturgeon:

After whiffing badly on a couple nice bites a short time later, I was able to land another much smaller sturgeon.

After that, we were stuck the rest of the chilly, drizzly morning being consoled by the fact that the boat fishermen across the river weren't catching anything either!

Thanks Andy - again, really appreciate you sharing your anchor hookup, sturgeon rig, and expertise.

Nice fish Sam!

Nice job on setting up that Oasis, too. If you are going to take it to Pacific City, you'll want to fish out of the front cockpit, though. I started out fishing from the rear, but after trying the front position (surf launch was impossible for me from the back position) I have made it my usual place. Weight balance is better, leading fish around the front is easier than the rear, and rear cockpit makes a great gear well - even better than the front, because you don't have to mess with the pedals.

Appreciate the feedback on the oasis. I really like that it works so well for taking my kids out fishing, and I'm working out some of the kinks when going solo (ballast!). I've spent quite a bit of time in the rear and really prefer that spot for most of my use (especially trolling), but have seen some of your previous discussion and will have to really consider if/when I decide to try the surf!

Nice fish Sam!  Way to go.

Deepcolor is truely a generous guide for that area and fun to fish with.

and I'm working out some of the kinks when going solo (ballast!).

I used to use an old plastic 5 gallon gas can filled with water. That provides about 40lbs of ballast, and I would put up against the front bulkhead. Worked pretty well for me. The buckshot filled drive plug method appeals to me too, although I never made one. Glad you're liking your Hobie and are getting your kids out in it.

Good times Sam.  It only took me about 30 minutes to teach you to outfish me...a new record.  Thanks for getting me out on the water.  It had been too long of a break.

Dang, nice fish! I really want to catch a sturgeon this year. I need to get up there! I might need some pointers...I'll have plenty of beginners luck hopefully.

Forgot to mention...  The paddle with the t-handle is right at 48" - which was the approximate length when held from nose to fork on the sturgeon!  Also, glad you snapped several photos - had a couple of eyes closed, squinting, and one where I looked pretty horrified - not sure what that was about.

Some great teachers in this area.  I'd be surprised if you weren't able to get some assistance on a trip up here...

Thanks all,
Sam
