OK, it's here and I plan to fish all 3 days in this Derby, (weather permitting).  I'll get out for a bit Friday too at Freshwater Bay around noon.  If anyone is interested come and join me.  As a heads up, the Straits can be challenging with strong currents and winds.  Let me know if you plan to come out.

http://gardinersalmonderby.org/  I meant to add this link to the Derby site.  A friend of mine took 3rd place last year, $3000 cash, (it's only 2k this year).  It's a good derby.

Was hoping to try this year at Disco Bay and  Admiralty but life has thrown a nasty little suckerpunch. Best of luck!!
To capture the fish is not all of the fishing. Yet there are circumstances which make this philosophy hard to accept.

Well sorry to hear that, let me know if you have some time to fish, I never head east but I know you have some good fishing that way.  Been thinking about that spot by the Bridge.  The sucker punches seem to come, things always happening here too.

If there's anyone who's got a chance at the money on a kayak, it's ohbryant! Rootin' for ya man!

I might make it Monday, weekend plans already. I'll ping Brad, he's looking for a blackmouth out my window on Shilshole Bay as I type this.

I'll be on the peninsula 21st - 24th, plan on working lakes and Freshwater Bay if the weather is decent.

Thanks for the Kudo's Rory.

It was probably the worst weather I've fished from the yak today but it was looking to be payday.  I'd decided to try to mooch which was a dicey prospect, due to the Washing machine like motion of the ocean.  Had to keep the rod in the holder and paddle into the wind to keep the line down where it was supposed to be, I guessed I was near the bottom after 10 or 15 minutes of this it looked like something was taking some interest, left it in the holder and a minute or 2 later down went the Rod tip and I was into a feisty King, after a few minutes of compliance it decided to go the other way and my fricken drag was too tight, managed to get it loosened and away she went, this was a winner or at least a placer and it hadn't shaken the hook yet.  After 6 or 8 minutes of battling the beast it was getting close and I was waiting for it to do that Salmon thing and break the surface and take off in another direction but no show, what's up?  Maybe it's not a Salmon ???, Big Ling?  No Way it's a Halibut, never thought I'd be disappointed to see one of those on the end of my line.  So no payday for me, I do have the photos.

Leviathan! Any idea how big? That is so cool man. The weather was snotty as [expletive] today but you're out salmon fishing from a kayak....and catching halibut. By the way, ob? You are tough as nails.

Go get 'em!

I'm guessing min 15lbs max 20.  Tough, maybe; but the wife thinks I'm just stupid.  Truth is I know my gear, I know Fbay, and am comfortable in pretty crappy conditions.  I would get blown back to the launch and have the tide at my back.  That X-factor is a sea worthy beast.  I've fantasized about getting out in one of those gails just to see what it was like,  one could get caught in that around here and I'd like to know.

Ohbryant--The weather sure looked rough from this side of the strait--I did have my vhf on, sitting comfortably by the wood stove but it looks like you were too busy to be talking on the radio even if I had called. Well done!
