I need to put some new braid on some reels. What kind of braid do you like and why. I am particularly interested I. Power pro - which is what I have used, and power pro slick - which is what I am thinking of too g with. However, I don't want to be closed minded. Discuss.

I use power pro also - never tried "slick" but I understand its smoother.
But what I really wanted to say is - i would urge you to check out the line strength.  I like power pro, but i did get a bad spool of it and lost a nice salmon once.  It came of the rack from Sportco, so it supposedly wasnt fake power pro.  I pulled on that bad line with my fish scale, and found that the 30# braid consistently broke at 18#, and because of that, it broke at knots at about 10-15#.
PS - one braid i would never get is P-Line Hydrofloat - no abrasion resistance at all.

Noah!!!! Say NO to search... this isn't related to braid obviously, but... I was thinking about this before I posted about braid.  Consider this... things change, opinions change, experiences grow AND what creates interaction is discussion - not searching. :)

Okay, I'll play. Pro Power is by far my favorite so far. Tuff line is terrible stuff. Spider Wire is pretty good but not as nice as pro power.

Having fished braid quite a bit, my experience has shown that the best braid for Spinning tackle is probably not the same for Bait Basting set-ups.  Most of my braid fishing experience is for bass, trout and tiger muskie.

For casting set-ups, I avoid using anything lighter than 40# because of the tendency for it to dig into the spool. Some have pretty good luck going as light as 30#.  My favorite braid for casting is Sufix Performance Braid 50#.  I also have one reel spooled with 40# Power Pro, and another with 65# Spider Stealth.  I've tried a 1/2 dozen other brands and types over the years that I won't go back to, but there are multiple new braided lines I haven't tried yet.

For Spinning set-ups you can go as light as you want. I have reels spooled now with 8, 10 and 15# braid, although I've used 20#, 30# and even 40# on spinning gear for bass, pike and muskie.  My favorite for spinning has been the standard P-line braid 20# (once all the green coating gunk finishes coming off of it), and it seems to last for years - my wife's Omega spincast reel is spooled with it, and does well on everything from trout, bass, to a 38" tiger muskie when using the proper leader.  My son's spinning reel always has 8 or 10# fireline - for more novic angler, I think there are fewer tangles and less line replacement using braid...some of it's other properties, like "no stretch" help hook more fish in my mind.  Power Pro also seems to handle nicely on my spinning reels. And, I just spooled up last season with some 15# Stren Sonic braid, but haven't fished it enough, so the verdict is still out.

With all that said, I realize I didn't really answer the "why?".

Sufix Performance Braid 50# on bait casting set-ups just handles and casts beautifully for me, doesn't fray, has very good abrasion resistance for braid, (still fades like all the others I've tried), and has incredible knot strength.  I've never lost a fish on it that I would blame on the line's performance.  It's awesome for top-water bass frogging, but also works great with wire or heavy flouro leaders for tiger muskie.  Ironically, I caught my biggest rainbow trout ever (5lb 13oz) while throwing a spoon for tiger's using this line with a fluoro leader.

P-line Spectrex 20# for Spinning: The one dislike is that it shed it's coating, but this doesn't seem to do anything to hinder it's performance.  On spinning gear, it casts beautifully, lasts a long long time, has great abrasion resistance and knot strength.  The 20# is only 6# test mono diameter.  I've never tried this brand on a bait caster, except one time in 20# for crankbait walleye fishing at night, but it would dig into the spool and stick there messing up my next cast after having a lot of tension pulled on it.   I've caught a lot of decent bass in heavy cover with a spinning rod using this line.

I've tried quite a few braid brands. Power Pro is my favorite. I just spooled one of my salmon reels with the new slick stuff. I used it for bottom fish once already and I like it. I'm not sure I'm completely sold on it yet, but so far it is pretty nice. Feels a bit more stiff than the regular PP to me, but it does straighten out nicely and it lays out nicely on the spool when reeled back in.

I just took some 35lb spider wire off one of my reels at lunch today.  I'm putting Mono back on in anticipation of Bass season coming up :P

I don't like braid rubbing on the rocks.

What was wrong with Tuff line? I'd never used any braid before but now have two reels with tuff line, just because that's what a guide I was fishing with was using. I don't have anything to compare it to.

Ok, don't avoid it, just make sure you don't use it for fishing.

Acceptable uses include, and are likely limited to:  flossing, sewing, and building snares for rabbits and juvenile giganto pithicis.

I'm also not a big fan of Tufline. I have Powerpro on two of my rigs, but I wan't overly impressed, and a "guide" told me to try Tufline last year for a new setup. For me, Tufline seemed to birds-nest easier (low-profile casting reel) and the profile of the line seemed to be more flat than round which I felt laid on the spool differently. I haven't caught a large fish with it, so I don't know about it digging in, but I could see that being more of an issue as well.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.
