Just saw this article and it reminded me of a story I saw on Oregon Field Guide about some mountain lakes here where people are dumping their goldfish.  They used rotenone to kill off those fish.

Makes me worry about finding these fish in a lake like that...

Golfish are commonly (illegally) used as live bait for Bass in Oregon lakes...

I've seen them in most ponds and creeks on the westside.

Maybe it's time to add "Gold fish" to AOTY in 2014 :)

In not sure why this is a story all of the sudden. I've caught goldfish nearly this big in Cayuga lake in upstate NY as well as in several large agricultural ponds in Japan. I assumed they were everywhere. They are hardy,  I saw dozens laying on the ice where a water intake was pouring into a frozen lake. Must jump out for some reason.

Actually, this brings up a good point.  Maybe offer a bonus point category for catching invasive species/non-native like Northern Pike and such?  just throwing it out there....

Hey, I grew up 25 miles north of Cayuga Lake.  I also remember seeing large gold fish about a foot long or so in the wild growing up.  We also had the occasional much larger wild koi swimming around as well.

A lot of AOTY fish are invasive:

Smallmouth Bass
Largemouth Bass
Crappie
Walleye
Rainbow Trout
Mackinaw
Catfish

If we added a bonus, it would only pay to fish for these species.

The funniest part, well maybe it's not funny at all, is that Northern Pikeminnow (oops!) isn't an invasive species.

Went to Cornell for my BA and MBA.  Had a great time fishing the region.  I will say that despite the trout, salmon, and bass in the area, my go to fish for just plain old fun was carp in near Stewart Park.
