hey there everyone, I'm out of Shelton. i have been fishing lakes since i was a little kid and have since started taking my own kids out to fish. I have a few guys that i go fishing saltwater with once a week or so.
I am new to kayaks and wanted to get into a group where i could ask questions and hopefully meet some people to get out on the water and chase some fish with.
I am buying a kayak within the next couple weeks and have a fishing charter bought and planned for out of Neah bay with the same guys i mentioned above. this year will be the year of the fish for me!

Hello wired! You are at the right place to have questions answered - there is a lot of experience here. Quite a few South Sound guys around, too.

Welcome aboard.

Any idea what model of kayak you will be buying?

Yea there are a few of us in the South Sound.

Don't hesitate to use that search function in this forum, its a veritable treasure trove of information.

longer yaks generally have more glide and are more efficient for covering distance.

Lee, I understand that... I am wondering why wired wants a 15 over a 13 or 11 or a whatever?

Longer kayaks tend to handle better in swells and they will have a higher top speed than a kayak the same width but shorter in length.

But shorter kayaks do have tend to an advantage when the waves start breaking. Most kayaks designed for surfing are quite short for instance.

Its all a trade-off. Increased speed and cruising efficiency for decreased turning ability etc etc.

hey guys, i am sorry about the long response time back. i just got moved into my house and got the internet up, we are stuck using satellite internet :-\ anywho to answer your question, i think i want the 15 because of what seems to be available on EBay and the prices, from what i have been reading it is really trade offs on any choice you make. i can get a prowler 15t angler for 899 with a paddle to my door, and tetra 10 angler for 650(barebones), or 775 with a seat, paddle anchor and two rod leashes. i like the idea of a bigger kayak myself, not that i am a real big guy, just a preference of mine.

I have been using a Prowler 15 for a few years now. I like the ability to cover water with the speed and glide that comes with a longer boat.

Keep in mind that all that speed and glide works against you if you have to fight wind.  Kykfshr and I spent an afternoon working our way a mile+ thru a headwind.  He paddled a 15 and I paddled a 13.  I had to stop multiple times to let him catch up where he normally smokes me.

If it is just about price... you might wait and keep a look out.  There have been a couple of great deals posted over the last month.  I got my T13 with everything for 800... and it was still in the plastic... and by everything I mean paddle, FF, rudder, anchor trolley, paddle leash, etc... there are great deals out there  I'm in shelton too if you want to talk yaks in person.
