Here's a link to a good self rescue video. JF runs a kayak fishing guide and instructing company out of Ucluelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

A paddle float is completely unnecessary for self rescue on a SOT kayak. Practice your self rescue. Anyone on the water should be able to get them self back on board in less than 30 seconds with a bare kayak.

This video illustrated another problem with Jackson kayaks. When flipped over the seat disconnects from the boat and must be put back in place before you can reenter. Not a huge problem in calm water but a huge problem in the surf.

Also I noticed his tackle box was completely empty. Not exactly real world. I don't like to just leash that type of box as it flopping out in the surf is very time consuming. If you attach pad eyes to both sides of your box you can secure it to the kayak so it will stay in place even when flipped over.

Re the paddle float: i don't carry one for the reason you mention but I figued there may be folks who need one to reenter their yak.

Yeah, you should be able to reboard with out a float. But after some recovery drills with one, I'm not going to fault him.
What does bother me is waving his butt in the air and kneeling in the boat. You really want to keep your weight low to keep from getting tossed again. In anything narrower than that Jackson (like most boats) is a recipe for further reboarding practice, especially in anything other than flat water.

Here is the second video in the series which demo's the rescue most of us actually use.

I think the first video suffers from an experienced sea kayaker trying to force his sea kayaking skills onto SOT kayak fishing.

Now where have I seen that happen before?

That boy definitely does it right.

Cross grip, butt low and paddle into the sunset.
