I live in Sumner, and i have a 13 5 mirage I love the ocean. I have been fishing since the Reagan years. however I just bought my kayak a couple weeks ago. I have made it out to la push, makah bay, and one failed attempt at westport last Saturday. Oh and I could use some advise on outfitting and a new seat.

I've got ya beat youngster, I was fishing when the peanut farmer was running the show. Good to see these whipper-snappers launching their little plastic boats and rippin' some gills.

And oh yeah welcome welcome.

I was out on the rocks. Not a day for boats, much less yaks. :)

I actually saw 2 guys come in with outbacks right as I was getting out of my truck. They had them trailered. How many of the guys on here actaully go out to the ocean and risk it?

A lot of us go in the Ocean, however I would not describe it as risking it. If you focus on having the proper safety gear and watching the forecast closely, and practicing reentry to your kayak, there is minimal risk. Proper immersion wear, radio, gps, having a buddy, etc helps to keep you safe.

I went out alone full drysuit jacket whistle and light. I have gps and I can swim like a horny dolphin. But I'm saying risk it. I have things I do in the summer, but I want to lingcod now. So foul weather, maybe a little to close to the rocks? I bought a drysuit because I plan on getting swept over.

Ocean actually seems much safer to me than a flowing river or remote lake.  More but spread out boat traffic, coast guard in standby with your federal tax dollars, and NO SWEEPERS! Hate those things!

I feel safer in my outback on the ocean than my non self bailing 21ft open bow center console boat with a 150 on it.

You may also want to invest in a VHF. If you are swept over and separated from your boat you won't have a lot of time, even with the drysuit.  People's definition of foul weather can vary. I've fished the ocean every month out of the year but I'm not going to go out on a day when I risk not coming back.

here is a guy who risked to much  http://www.theolympian.com/2013/03/19/2468869/mcneil-island-kayaker-dies-at.html.  One kayaker didnt make it back. I just wonder how often, and how big of seas people go out in.

Here is a great write up to get you going. Magic seaweed is also a good resource. I usually look at that and the NOAA forecast and average the two. If doing a surf launch I generally look for a 4 foot or less swell with a duration of 8 seconds or more and wind under 10 MPH. In some of the areas of the Sound you also have to be really mindful of the currents.
