OK I am going to start looking at camera's. I would like a wide angle. I know the gopro 3 is the most mentioned. I just want to look around first. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I'm buying the Go Pro hero 3 white edition next week. I've watched enough videos on YouTube that I'm convinced Go Pro is the best for the money. $200 is not a bad price for such a power house of a camera.

I don't think the white edition is wide angled. The silver and black are for sure. The silver is $299...I don't know that the wide angle is that important to me for $100-$200 more.

I believe that all the HD Gopros have the wide angle capability (ie. 170 degree field of view).  Basically, the larger the number the closer you can be to something and still capture the entire object.  The downside is distortion (a noticeable curvature on the edges).

My personal experience is with the original HD Hero  and it has a 170 degree field of view when set in 720p. It (original HD Hero) had a 127 degree field of view when set at 1080p. The Hero 2 you could actually switch to 90 degree field of view.  If you are mounting it on your yak to film yourself, the 170 degrees is what you want.  I wish I could get the 90 for my original HD Hero when I film other people so I don't have to get too close.

On the go pro site it doesn't mention a wide angle option with the white edition but does with the black and silver.

The Hero 3s all use the same optics. Check out the "specs" section of each.  White edition specs: http://gopro.com/cameras/hd-hero3-white-edition#specs

White edition:

Optics

Ultra sharp ƒ/2.8 6-element aspherical glass lens
Ultra wide angle / reduced distortion

Black edition:

Optics

Ultra sharp ƒ/2.8 6-element aspherical glass lens
Ultra wide angle / reduced distortion
2X Better low-light performance*

The more expensive versions with the "2X Better low-light performance*" is due to the ccd (most likely) and software.  Which is also probably why they are higher resolution (5 mp versus 12 mp) and higher frames per second.

Love my new gopro.  I had a contour+ and it was great at first, worked awesome on our Hawaii wedding/honeymoon trip, then I got back and went to Heroes on the water Chum Run event, and the power button broke.  Sent it in and they repaired it.  When I got it back I took it on a snow shoe trip.  I recorded about 10 videos, but when I got home only one was video with no sound, and the rest were just files that could not be opened.

To me it seems like everything with the GoPro has better detail and attention given to it.  Even the simple things like the headband mount.  Contour version is a 1" wide single strap.  GoPro version is a 2" wide strap with a strap that goes over the top of the head too, and they put that rubbery strip backing on the inside of it to keep it from sliding around.

Looks like JVC has a action camera.

My guess is not as rugged as the Go PRO and it has only a 5 meg CMOS sensor. waterproof to 5 meters. no housing required. Sound should be better than a GO PRO in a housing.

Not trying to sound like a douchey know it all but after reading the specs again I noticed that the field of view on the white edition is medium at 1080p and wide for the lower resolution. The others have the ultra wide view for all settings. We are both right! Haha.

Thanks Guys.

This is all very helpful. I like the fact that a lot of knowledge and research goes into this by this forum.

Sure makes a guys job easier. I am leaning toward the silver or black. I am not to worried about sound. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Thanks
