Oh I hope it's not Mother's Day weekend. I've got family coming up to see / visit my poor old Mom on the occasion. By all indications, a likely last visit and so emotions will run high.

I'd have to figure out how to slip away without looking like an awful daughter -- though poor Mom is so deeply effected by Alzheimer's that she won't mind. It's the visitors who must be managed -- and I doubt they'd understand how it's the fishing and kayaking and hiking that keeps me sane and steady enough to take care of her every day.

Another occasion when responsibility is highly overrated.

Well dang Pam, I sure hope you can make it.

Fortunately for me, my mother lives in Kenai so that's kinda sorta on the way.

Weather is always an issue so you never know. Last year if I recall correctly they delayed the first day then pushed it off to the next weekend.

It's a good thing I didn't run into any of you Friday. Afterwards I felt like I got hit by a truck and even today I'm at home sicker than a dog. Argh.

Ok....Houston, we have a problem. Apparently the tournament organizer is 80 and wants to retire. So the word right now is no tournament.

There are several trying to make it happen but doesn't look good.

It's still a GREAT time to be down there. So if we get official word it's off, lets plan a NWKA get together.

More to come...stay tuned.

I'll trust you to keep us updated, Rudy. I think the NWKA should plan on a meet-up regardless.  If there's not a derby, let me put in my plug for May 18 and 19 -- when there are some nice small tidal swings to make it easy on us. Not coincidentally, by then my house guests will be gone so I can go too.

For the sake of discussion let's assume there's no derby: what May weekend works best?

Can't say I'd fault the old boy for backing away from organizing this at his age though. I'd think it would be a PITA.

Well even if the derby is a go, this makes it difficult to plan.  I am good with May 18th and 19th.

Frankly in May, every weekend and potential PTO days are going to be spent hitting the kings and halibut off Cook Inlet.

I'm in!

I should make that as well! I'll definitely be there 4 days. I learned last year that 2 or 3 days is just too short!

This is shaping up.  A couple of days at Whiskey Gulch is now written in ink on my fishing calendar for that weekend (5/18 - 5/20).  If the derby gets green-lighted, that's great too. Looking forward to it. I hope to have several days fishing accomplished before then. This year's goal is 55 days on the water...

Ok.  The latest word is there are several people trying to put this together and they are looking at May 18th which is the date we all set to get together at Whiskey Gulch anyways so it should  be all good regardless.

Sounds like a good time. Have to see if I can make that time frame work. Not sure if I will be able to make a good test run before that. Not sure about making the inlet my first expedition into the salt.

Something to think about though.

We will have 6 or more kayaks on the water those days as we had planned a NWKA get together that weekend anyways at Whiskey Gulch.  C'mon down!!!  The inlet is no problem if you go wth a group.  Tides are moderate I think.  Should be lots of action from haibut and cod if the Kings aren't cooperative.

Keep an eye on this board, I think many of us will be hitting Cook Inlet as weather allows from now to end of May.  Definitely THE spot to fish in Southcentral Alaska during that period for meat fish...Kings and Halibut.
