It looks like Ihoppa myself and a friend will be fishing at GR park this Saturday.  Everybody is welcome to join us

It looks like we will be launching around 10am.

Hope to see you there.

Oh man, that sounds like fun. I don't know if I'm equipped for sturgeon though. I'm a complete noob and have never fished for them. I really want a sturgeon as part of my final aoty score! Could a guy catch one from a salmon rig?I use a 8'6" lamiglass cascade pro and an Abu 6501 C3. Would 80# braid be able to handle one of those beasts?

That setup will work. If you hook an oversize you might struggle a bit, but it can be done.
Since sturgeon is closed for retention on the Willamette you couldn't count the sturgeon you catch this weekend towards your AOTY point total.

Is it always closed for retention?

The Willamette is closed most of the year. It will be briefly opened in July for a couple weekends then closed again.
The Columbia is open.

Good to know, I appreciate the info. Sturgeon is definitely on my list this year. I'm four hours away from the Columbia and Willamette. I'm going to have to try and make a trip up there worth the gas and such. So it makes sense to learn how to catch them on waters I can keep them.

I really understand the long drive issue Ling ling,  I've over 300 miles away.  I try to get some fishing in every trip i make to the PDX area to make it worth it.

You've got sturgeon right where you live.

Thanks for the open invite.  I have my anchor setup complete and my sturgeon gear is ready to go - was already contemplating an initial test down at GR this weekend.  I have some afternoon plans, so will likely get started down there earlier than 10, but will look for you guys...

I imagine that we may be there around 9 to unload.  We're just going to take it easy and enjoy the rainy day :)
