I can't say that I'm a fan of Pelican products but I saw what looked like a good deal on a new boat at the Sports Authority in Jensen Beach.  Pelican 11'6 fishing yak, came with a mounted Scotty mount rod holder and the standard 2 behind the seat, and a seat I think.  It looked pretty nice, the original retail was 539.  Also a Perception, nice looking boat with Scotty mount, paddle and cheapo racks and seat for 750$.  I think there was only 1 of the Pelicans.

I think for a bit more you could buy this Ocean Kayak Trident 13 for $800.

Just a idea.

Did you buy it? I know you had $400 in your pocket. Thanks for bringing down the pro explorer yesterday. I think it will work out well. Did you ever have an issue with water in the seating area? Looks like the scupper is a bit small for any good drainage. I may just plug it.

Well I always had dry gear on so it's not an issue, seems like it stayed pretty dry, I didn't buy it, didn't really like the hull design but it would work.  I have the hatch in it's package and will get if off tomorrow.

Was this the Pelican Castaway 116? Seems to be one of the more popular boats at the price point. There will soon be in Kayak Fishing Magazine a survey of $500-ish boats. In researching the topic, I found a few others that seemed to be appreciated by budget-minded anglers. The Lifetime Tamarack and Ascend (Bass PS) FS12T are popular models, as well...

I've never paddled them, but forum posts, largely stemming from the south, discuss the pros and cons in detail...

Saw this at Dick's yesterday. Only $549 for a 12.5ft kayak. Lots of bells and whistles.

I don't know much about their kayaks, but don't bad mouth Pelican. They make a lot of nice stuff. Their dry boxes are top notch. Got one from CBY at SBAOTD a couple years ago it locks up nice and tight.

I think it was AJ, didn't plan to buy it so didn't pay that much attention, but I was impressed with the price for a new boat with some added gear.

This is the same kayak I just donated to HOW Portland.  I used it for a year and had it on the salt.  I'd still be using it if I hadn't bought an Outback.
