Winter is cruel, but summer just got a little closer!

Just picked up this Wilderness Tarpon 140. One of my top 3 choices if I had to order. Only 3 years old.

Even matches my Truck!

Now need some open water for testing.

I'll keep an eye open for that pretty blue Tarpon.  I was planning to float the Upper Kenai today, but yesterday's snowfall put in the mood to ski instead.  That's the only open water tempting me right now -- rainbows and Dollies. But in two weeks, there's a great tide for halibut in Lower Cook Inlet.

Where are you likely to be testing out your new fishing platform?

Depends on ice out. I want a couple of good days falling out and climbing back in, maybe some river time, before I venture out into the Salt.

I will be including it into Memorial Day festivities!!

You can practice dumping and deep water reentry at the Bartlett pool on Wednesday evenings -- it's never crowded and the mild water lets you practice many self-recoveries without getting worn out from the cold.

Something to do while waiting for ice out!

Maybe. Might try the Kenai to before the closure.

What a cruel joke this weekend was.

Sweet. We will keep an eye out. Personally I think a place like Whittier is a much better place to try out a yak than in moving waters. Unlike Akfishergal who is at home on rivers, I feel safer a mile off shore than challenges of moving water and sweepers. It's whatever you have experience in I guess.

Hope to see you out there!!!!

Well my experience on a Kayak is pretty minimal, so I do need to get my feet wet kinda slow so to speak. I am sure once I get a little seat time, the adventuring will pick up quickly. Never been to patient about waiting for the right time. Just do it baby!!

I do want to be Bottom fishing by August if not before.

I suppose small steps is prident.  But there are BIG fish to catch in May!  If you can go out wih folks, it makes the learning curve go by a lot faster.

By mid may, we will be fishing Deep Creek/Whiskey Gulch area.  I mainly target kings but the small chicken halibut you should be able to haul up one after the other...well it seems that way.  The currents make it a bit tricky but definitely doable with a little prep.

My thoughts about fihsing that area.

Take small steps and build confidence -- then by August you'll be hunting big fish in saltwater. If that's where your interest is. Our enthusiasm for seeing your pretty Tarpon on the water is partly happiness at seeing our numbers grow, and with it developing more local kayak fishing knowledge.

It really does help to put our heads together from time to time. Most of us are out there solo, whether its freshwater or saltwater. Sometimes we run into one another on the water, but usually not. Always it makes me happy to see another kayak angler at play.

The calendar is starting to fill up with hopeful plans. Since anything south of Kenai Lake represents a big time commitment, those are trips I normally know will happen days in advance. This year I'll try to develop a more reliable habit of starting a planning thread here to promote participation on those trips.

Kard's suggestion to try out saltwater from Whittier is a good one when the time comes. Easy launch access, and a webcam at the harbor lets you check whether the weather in Whittier is prettier, or that other rhyming word that is so much more common.

Well of course, I would rather be out there sooner than later, just have to temper my enthusiasm with a bit of safety.

Although with some cooperation from the weather, might be able to do a combo trip on Memorial Day weekend. Will probably be down there with the motor boat either way.
