Rory, you would happen to have a spare balloon wheel for sale would you?
I lost one of my wheels last month. It must have popped itself loose when I took the boat down a trail. I usually store the cart in my scuppers when transporting the kayak. It probably rolled off and into a ditch somewhere on my way back from an outing.

I have mine set up like Insayn's.  Use the $50 wheelez some PVC and a Aluminiminiminim shaft for the Axel. Works great! You don't get the damage on the scupper holes.  If you use the heavier PVC it will hold together fairly well.  Still subject to damage from Rory use but still not too bad.  And no kidding on the recessed valve stems.  I looked all over for something that would go on them. Ended up getting a small compact plastic ball pump from wallmart for cheep that works great.
PROGRESS IS JUST BEING THERE!

Rory--you're pain made me laugh because I've shared so much of it The broken welds, difficulty loading--all that stuff. i  use the ctug and will probably buy the sidewinder kit when it hits my local kayak stores--but even that--don't talk to me about ctug strapping.

I still recall the very first time I tried to get my kayak on the wheelez solo @ hobuck.
I think I spent a good solid 30 mins, with 4-5 fall-offs.
That being said, once it was set It worked nicely.

Every time it fell off, I thought to myself. I can fly multi million dollar machinery,
BUT I CANT GET THIS KAYAK ON THIS KAYAK CART.

I need to work on some kind of mod to make it easier, but I'm also too busy with so many other things.

I feel your pain Rory. The crossbar welds on my hobie trax gave out recently and I lost the crossbar. For their cost they are kinda a rip off aren't they?

I'm going to get mine welded back together by a professional but one should really expect more for an $190 piece of metal with wheels...and those stupid valves on the wheel ugh!!

Ha! Someone else's misfortune with the broken Hobie cart became my fortune. http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=7046.0

I obtained a broken one for $10 and welded it with some stainless wire.

My observation is that they are very poorly constructed.  They have such tiny spot welds and some do not even contact both surfaces which were to be welded together ::).  I was putting ndogg's in my trailer when we were heading out for a fishing trip and it snapped apart.  I welded his, as well.  If you want an awesome cart, you need Wobbler to build one.  I prefer it over the Hobie cart.

Rory, next time you come down to Oregon, bring the broken frames and I will attempt to weld them back together.  They may not be pretty, but they won't break again.

Nice!  I think I have three busted frames in the garage.  Might take you up on that!

For some reason I am envisioning Rory loading up his kayak on the cart in the parking lot, balancing himself somewhere over the pivot point of the cart and riding the kayak to the boat ramp.  :sign10:

That'd be a video to see..........

So uh, I know Bill was looking into making better drive pedal shafts, but what about a better wheel cart that uses those wonder 30 cm wheels that we all have sitting around?  (well mine hasn't failed yet, but unless you're just terribly unlucky, it's just a matter of time)

These carts/wheels are so shitty. I lost one wheel earlier in the year. It just fell off while stored in the scuppers while driving down the road. I replaced the wheel and after a couple of months it has  a wonderful new crack in it and it doesn't stay on the axle. You would think for a $200 dollar piece of gear it would hold up better. I feel your pain, man.  >:(

Same thing happened to me. I'm going get the welds redone by a local welding shop, its kind of ridiculous how crappy the welds are, especially when you are forking over nearly 200 bucks for em.

Yea Hobie carts suck big time. A huge rip off IMO...
