No pics... but we are talking about the pole holders most yaks seem to have on both sides, just behind the seat.

So, mine was torn out in a surf crash.  I need to get in back in... I found most of what I need to make it all work except... I can't find the "rubbery" gasket that was between it and the yak.  Hopefully some of you know what I am speaking of.  Is this "gasket" a necessary component or is goop sufficient?

Also, is there any significant difference between goop and marine goop?

As always, thanks guys...

if the gasket is necessary... even if it is just preferred... where can I find one around olympia.  West marine didn't have one and cabela's didn't have one... anyone know who would?  I need it tomorrow.

I would replace the gasket and put a bit of goop on the fastener holes. I believe Kayak fishing supplies carries these.

Make a cardboard template of what you need using cardboard from a cereal box or similar.
Then hack up a rubber inner tube and copy the shape to it.
Apply some goop to both sides and stick it in place.

Done!  ;)

The gasket isn't really needed.  Just put plenty of goop between rod holder and hull, and wipe away the excess once you're done.  Craig's method with the inner tube is pretty damned easy too though.

For a cleaner look using Goop, tighten down only till it begins to ooze out around the entire perimeter.
Stop tightening and let it start to set up.

Wait about 30-40 mins and check if it is firm, but not solid.
If so, tighten a tad more just to get a good seal.

Alos, use a sharp blade and trim off the excess Goop close to the project.
Don't wait to trim once it is fully cured, as it is much more difficult to do a nice job.

Once it is fully set, finish tightening it down to your liking.

I have noticed that Marine GOOP is a great adhesive as well as a sealant.   Since I thought I may want to pull the holders down the road,  I used Silicone to seal around mine.   I am hoping I don't find out why everyone else is using marine goop.  :(
I used to think that Bigfoot might exist. Then I saw the reality shows where they are looking for them.  Now I am certain they don't

Silicoln does not stick to plastic kayaks worth a crap. Messy, and unreliable.
Marine Goop can be removed by "popping" it off.
It has a much stronger bond to plastic for sure, but not for eternity.
