As I was re-organizing some threads and reading the "list" thread and seeing another thread on another site, I kept seeing some stuff about knives.    Being an important safety consideration, I thought it good to bring it up again.  BTW, someone didn't have it on their list  ::)  ... I hope they'll put it on there soon.

I have one of these (Gerber River Runner) on my vest at all times.

I used the blunt point for many years as I had one from my water water days.  When I finally lost it I switched to the sharp tip.

And when it comes times to clean fish, I use a few different kinds of knives.

Forschner 12" Cimeter knife ... great for filleting out a larger fish like a salmon.  And when you want to play like a pirate afterward, this beast of a knife is just plain fun to swing around.  Look out!!!

But I also have some standard issue Dexter Russell 7",8", and 9" filet knives

Cool thread Pole... I'm looking to retire my old knife! I've been looking at the Gerber Rivermate knife.

http://www.nrsweb.com/shop/product.asp?pfid=2762

NRS also makes a pretty nice looking knife. Note the integrated bottle (BEER) opener in the handle! ;)

PS. That large fillet knife that Pole posted is one mean bruiser.  >:D

On my rafting vest I carry an old Gerber diver's knife like this one:

On my new fishing vest, I have a blunt tip Gerber river knife like the one Pole mentioned.  I should swap them around (if I ever drop the diver's knife in my self-bailing whitewater raft, I'm going to have a problem with that inflatable floor.

I have a couple of Wenger Swiss Army knives in my hiking/fishing/camping gear as well as a Gerber multi-tool that I almost never use.

The knife I actually use the most is a Gerber lock blade (notice a pattern here?)

I've got a Gerber fillet knife in the kitchen drawer (often abused by my wife to cut things it should not be used to cut), and a Kershaw fillet knife in my garage (safely hidden so it won't be used to cut frozen chicken.)

This is the knife I've used the last few years, Gerber's EZ-Out Rescue:

I'm thinking about picking up one of these, though:

Hey Polepole,
Where did you find the best price on the Forschner cimitar? I saw and artivcle a while back I think in Salmon, Trout Steelheader mag where the Pro-Cure owner was selling them for about $70 bucks... is that a good price?

I've been thinking about this issue too. I have a folding knife on my PFD at all times and even though i can grab it and open it pretty fast, it's still an extra step that when under duress might not be that easy to accomplish.

So i think i will get a fixed blade knive in a sheath and i would recomend everyone do the same.

Nice timing..My buddy showed up as i was writing this and gave me a nice filet knife..I was gonna say i needed one of those too, but i guess i don't now. :)
See ya on the water..

My next knife will be one of these:

http://www.speargun.com/knives.htm#silencer

The SILENCER is made of hardened (heat-treated) 420 stainless steel capable of cutting through stainless
steel cable. The 4 ½” serrated blade has a Teflon coating for a smooth surface and to prevent rusting.

The over-molded handle has a secure grip to prevent slipping and a built-in tool located at the end for
removing shafts that are wedged into rocks or used as a banger to attract the attention of other divers or
fish. The self-locking sheath comes with a pair of rubber leg straps and lanyard for extra security.

I know Joe's has the Gerber Rivermate and they are currently having their clearance/bankruptcy sale.  Knives are currently 10% off, but will be going down further soon...

I'm hoping to get the NRS knife for my B-day next month.   ;D

the main reason is to cut yourself free from entangled ropes or leash's if you capsize or cut the line on a downrigger if it gets hung up.

Or you could shank your fishing buddy if he catches way more fish then you do. This may put a damper on your friendship though, so i don't recommend it.

After one trip out to the salt, I found that my Gerber AR 3.0 is way too sensitive to salt water(I guess that goes for most things).
I am now going to be using my dive knife.
It's a Wenoka, can be completely disassembled for easy cleaning, and has a 420 stainless blade. The sheath did come with leg straps, but I'm going to zip tie the sheath to the front of my pfd so it's easy to grab.

Gotta rinse 'em off real good and spray them down with some silicone spray after every time out on salt. Dry silicone spray is the best, and spendy.

The Gerber River Runner knives I mentioned have been put through a lot (and a lot of missed rinsings) over the past 14-15 years that I've used them.  They pick up a little surface rust every now and then, but nothing that cant be rubbed out with a little scotch brite.  Extremely low maintenance IMO ... I give them a shot of whatever light oil I have laying around after I rub them clean.  This happens whenever I happen to think about doing that (not very often).  I sharpen them maybe once a year.

X2

Pole's man-kinfe AKA the Victorinox scimitar is great for salmon filleting but even better for rockfish and lings. Slices through bones w/ the greatest of ease. Very man-tastic! I'm loving the semi cheapie Dexter Russell 9".

I had one just like that. I really liked the knife, but the plastic sheath broke while I was diving & I lost it to the Big Blue.
