Ok, I'm planning a trip to Homer this Saturday.  The plan is to take a water taxi towards Sadie Cove and get dropped off.

I won't have second outback so it will be my outback and mini x.  We plan to hit beaches for a minus 5 tide and get butter clams.  Low tide is like 10:30am I think.  Then we will fish rockfish and maybe kings. Leave whenever but thinking 4pm pick up.  $75 per person for transport.

I've booked the ride but he knows I might cancel for weather but its looking like its going to be good and that area is really well sheltered.

Room for lots more!

Mmmhh that sounds fun. I was just gonna post that I'll be down in whiskey gulch this weekend. I don't really care about clams though. You didn't mention halibut, so  guessin they probably aren't going to be around?

Wow. I appreciate that.  But a part of taking a taxi to a sheltered location is so Michele can get used to all the pieces of equipment I have.  I want her comfortable in the mini x as I see her on local lakes and rivers by herself with it.  She's taking a women's fly fishing class and I know she is going to get hooked.

Not sure about the halibut.  Not sure about much over there.  I hear the steamers are long gone but lots of butter clams.  Lots of deep water near by.  I'll probably be fishing for anything that bites and I would not be surprised to hook a halibut.  I would fish kings all day but I want to start with high percentage fish first.  Greenling, flounder, rockfish and such.  If I catch anything bait size and legal, I'm going to use it for bait...

Ah, thought you'd have her in the outback and you'd be in the mini-x.

"Ok, I'm planning a trip to Homer this Saturday.  The plan is to take a water taxi towards Sadie Cove and get dropped off."

That should be a great plan Rudy.I've fished Sadie Cove quite a bit and just after you take a left into the inlet there will be a powerline overhead about 200 yards in. On the left side there is a sharp point sticking out where I've slam-dunked rockfish.Drift a chunk of herring as you drift past this point and you will not be able to get your bait to the bottom before it gets hammered.Of course it's about 120 feet deep only 20 feet off the cliff. But the fishing there has always been exceptional for me there. It's a go-to kinda place.Good luck and have fun.
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Thanks for the tip Mark!  We have been told that a little further in we would find butter clams.  So We will definitely be checking it out.  Getting a bit concerened about the weather. North 20knts, seas 3ft.  But I think if we can get tucked into one of the coves, we still plan on going.

I need to teach Michele a few things.  Being on a kayak is a tad different of courseing from baiting and switching your own gear to handling rockfish with sharp spines. l think if we do go and hit the tide right, given the large low tide, I might spend as much time tidepooling and checking out some things shallow. This trip, if I can get a bag fuull of butter clams, get Michele comfortable on both yaks, learn to tack upwind at least a little bit with the sail kit, and catch a few rockfish, I would call the day a success!

If it looks good, you can rent yurts there which are like cabins for something like $75 per day.  Definitely will be looking into that.

Spoke to the water taxi guy (HomerDave on Outdoors directory  http://www.homerwatertaxi.com/) and he seems to think its still a go for the Islands.  He has a double tandem kayak and Michele and I so far.  We leave at 8am out of Homer on Saturday.

Things can still obvisoulsy change but I think we are going to go for it.

Well had a great day of kayaking, not so good fishing or clamming.  Bunch of flounder, a few pollock, and a fish that I have no clue.  Michele had her rod double over in 300 ft of water...but no hook up.  Argh.

But the wildlife was good. 15 moose spotted in a 90 mile stretch between Soldotna and Homer on the drive down.  Who would have thought we would have been face to face with a mountain goat from a kayak?? Sea otter with pups, eagles, and a seal.  We will definitely do this again in the summer or fall!!
