hey guys, I bought my yak about 2 months ago. I have been out at least every weekend, usually twice a week fishing lakes. I have caught some small crappie using bobbers but have yet to have any luck with my normal shore fishing method of hitting the bottom with power bait/eggs. so my question, is there any trick you guys know of to fish the bottom when there is wind.  I have not spent much time fishing from boats so I could attribute getting far less bites mistaking it for wind/waves. but fishing the bottom I am getting skunked  :'(. any advice would be great!

Bottom fishing with power bait doesn't work very well from a kayak unless the lake is glass and there is no wind. Quite frankly, I think power bait fishing is boring :/
Have you tried slow bouncing a half a night crawler on a dropper?
Use 1/4 oz egg weight or some split shots on your mainline just above the swivel. Below the swivel run 36 inches or so of 4 lb leader to a bait hook. Thread half a night crawler on the hook. Try to get at least half of the body of the worm on the hook and run it up your line a bit if its too long. The other half of the work (the pointy end) should be allows to flick around freely.
Drop the worm till you find bottom, then reel up once or twice and do slow, sporadic twitches with your rod tip.
This works stationary as well as if you just let the wind gently push you around. If its windy I sit side saddle with my back to the wind and fish off the side of my kayak while the wind gently moves me around. Trout have a hard time resisting a nightcrawler. Plus, usually they slam the worm or at least pick it up and run with it as opposed to the tiny nibbles you get on power bait.
You can also use the same method listed above and use a worm blower to inflate your worm. You get the same effect as power bait only better IMO.

Works great if you have an anchor.   ;)
I agree with you about the worms though.  Great option for trout fishing off the bottom.  Unless there are bull heads around.

Good point Jeff. Wired, if you don't have one yet, look into a cheap lake anchor. Usually some  para chord and a small claw or homemade anchor works weight works well.

Just use a walleye set up, if you want to stay on the bottom. I personally like the slow death hooks with a worm 75% up the shank.

thanks guys, I will give that a shot. growing up I always used worms and just fished for small bass/panfish on bobbers from the shore, so this is a bit different. I actually prefer them since they fight so much better than a trout. I have an anchor and a trolley system in my yak. I appreciate the feed back!
