I have been chomping at the bit to get out and do some fishing in the salt, the last few weekends have not worked out between unfavorable forecast and visitors.  So I looked a the forecast for this weekend and it looks like this Friday may be the best day for weather-wise.

So if anybody is interested in joining me I'll  be launching from the beach south of the cape around 10 am or so (Low tide is at about 8am so ill be fishing as the tide comes in and landing as the tide is going out)

Hopefully I will have some photos of my first lingcod, and maybe a nice rockfish for the dinner plate!!

PM me or respond to this post and we can coordinate if you want to join!!

Cheers,
 Bernie

Wish I could join you. I am dying to try out my new outback. Brought it out a few times on the river. I was hoping for decent conditions on the weekend and maybe tag along with a group on Saturday or Sunday.

Annnnd, I'm back on the Kayak Fishing Boards!

I'm going to try and make it out tomorrow (Saturday). Was really hoping for today, but it's just not in the cards.

Madoc, welcome back.

You're welcome to come fish with me anytime.  I'm sure I can come up with a great cross training routine for you that involves dragging my kayak a few hundred yards in soft sand (maybe with me still sitting on it) and then dead lifting the kayak back on to my truck when I'm done.

I should have signed up for this year's AOTY. Launched into an absolutely flat ocean, pedaled out to the rock, and commenced to bob around pretending to be a fisherman. Got my first fish, a 23" Lingcod, boated at about 8:30am, after an hour or so of trying to find the right spot. I can't remember who saw me in the parking lot while I was struggling into my drysuit, but thanks for the head's up. That there are Chinook out and about. I managed to convince one to buy what I was selling while moving out towards the bouy, over about 106' of water. When I was loading the car Friday night, I considered bring the salmon net that I have, but opted in favor of my little net for portability. I realized that perhaps I should have brought said net when i brought the fish to the boat initially. Smart thinking, but besides crimping all of the hooks that I use, I'm rarely expecting to catch a salmon. Luckily, I have a superfabric fish handling glove. Which means I was able to reach down and grab the fish by the jaw, and not worry about the teeth. Wrestled it into the boat once I verified the species (black gums, teeth, spots), and leg locked it into submission.

And then I realized that I have no catch bag on my boat. And that Salmon needed to be iced. So I cut my fishing day short to not waste my fish.

I got back to the beach and did my standard "get off the boat in chest deep water and walk it back I through the surf. Which is when I realized that I had failed to close my drysuit zipper all the way.

All in all, a good return to fishing. I'm really hoping for the confluence of a hole in my schedule, calm conditions, and bitey fish again.

That is awesome Madoc!  Nothing like catching a Chinook as plan B.  :)  I would gladly cut my day short for some salmon meat.  If I had known, I would have told you to unzip my back window and grab some ice out of my cooler.  Lord knows I didn't need it.  ::)  Well, maybe a little for my one keeper crab.  Then you could have come back out for another.

Way to go Madoc, and welcome back!

I couldn't believe how strong the current was on Friday.  It was only about 0.4 mph south in the morning, but by around noon it was a steady 2.0 mph, which is about as much as I've ever seen at PC.  I cruised by the buoy and it was putting off an eddy that made me feel like I was in a river.  That made fishing tough for sure but the fish were biting pretty good.  Good thing the swell was essentially nothing.

Nice to see you again Madoc, that was me in the parking lot. Glad to hear you hooked up a nice blackmouth.

I went out on Kiwanda Jr.'s dory and he landed a tasty chicken about 3 minutes into the first drop. We fished another 4 hours with nothing but flounder stealing bait. When we hit the beach and I saw your rig gone and I suspected you had a good day. 😃

Glad to see you out there again after your long layoff. Much more action ahead in the season, look me up, I'd love to get back out there w/ya.

I knew I heard you making a stupid pot joke on the radio.

Madoc was not the only one to find fish on Friday.
With good ocean conditions predicted throughout the day a few of us decided to follow the PC Dory fleet offshore on Friday to try to for some halibut.  After an easy launch we dropped crab traps and started trolling our way to halibut grounds.  Langcod hooked up a nice nook, but unfortunately he had some issues getting it in his kayak and ended up not just losing his fish but his rod too.  A few minutes after that I got slammed by a Chinook, that managed to snap my line while I was messing with my drag.  That was it for salmon action.  On our first drift over the halibut grounds I managed to hook a sole that was smaller than my bait.  After reeling in our lines we headed north to the top of the drift to try again.  Almost immediately after hitting the bottom I was hooked up. The fish was not the biggest but ever, only 35.25 inches long, but it put up a spirited fight, and only fed my desire to catch a bigger one.  Once the fish was on the boat I gave Craig my secret rig and started cranking back the beach with Langson, so I could target rockfish.  I think Craig and Langston also got bites but were not able to connect.  By this point the current had picked up an even though we aimed for a spot north of the haystack we still ended up nearly a mile south of the launch.  After dropping my halibut in the cooler I headed back out and found a school of rockfish feasting on crab spawn.  Fishing was hot for about 10 minutes with both skidplate and I hooking into a couple fish.  After that fishing died and we decided to head back.  By the time we hit the beach we had covered over 12 miles and were completely exhausted.  Crabbing was slow; we only managed 1 keeper out of 5 traps.

I think Craig and Langston also got bites but were not able to connect.

The only thing I connected with is probably still connected.

It shouldn't be, unless you weren't fishing barbless.   :police:  ;)
