Hey there old friends. Been awhile since logging onto the forum, and since having moved back to the desert. As many of you may remember, I have an OK T-11 and love it, but have always wanted to get into a Hobie too. Currently, I have a chance to pick up an older Hobie Revo (even the color I have wanted), but was really wanting an Outback. The Revo has no rudder and no Mirage drive, maybe even other things missing, but on the bright side, the dealer told me he would let it go for $375. My thought is, between him, eBay and all of the other online sources, I could get it back to great shape reasonably. Or can I? The other thought is, if I decided I still would rather have the Outback, I could sell the fixed up Revo and turn a decent profit to apply. The question of the year is....Should I do it? My thought is yes, but I'd like to hear from all of my old NWKA buddies and anyone else with an opinion or experience doing the same. Thanks guys (and gals) and hope all of you are doing well...Dave

I think if I could do it over again I'd rather have the revo over my outback. I'm mostly in the salt though And like to travel.

I think a new mirage drive is 5 hundred something? No clue on the rudder.  If you could buy the kayak and get it fixed up for a grand that would be worth it

I agree with Matt on fixing it up. Worst case scenario you're stuck with a Revo, best case you sell it and get an Outback.
I would demo one of each if I were you. You're not going to settle the everlasting Revo vs. Outback debate until you see which one is right for you.
I'm more worried about the shape and background story of the Revo. Who has just a boat and no rudder, drive, or essentials?
Sounds a bit suspect to me.

Yeah I assumed since you said you were buying it from a dealer that the hull  was in great shape. If it was all beat up I'd probably pass

If the hull doesn't leak and all things equal, buy the revo. I have both and I now go to the Revo before I go to the Outback. it's lighter, faster and equally as stable. The only thing is my dog likes the Outback better. Get the sailing rudder because you would have bought it eventually. And you would have bought turbo fins also so go on ebay and find a mirage drive with turbos. After your first trip you will never look back. That's my 2 cents.

Funny thing, I own both and go to the Outback first. It really is a "what fits you best" debate. I like the quick turns and stability more. Do demo both to see what suits you best. Everything else above, including the dog, I agree with whole heartily.

Is the hull a new old model year or is it used?  What year is it?  Is it missing the rudder only or the whole assembly?

I would be sure to figure out what other parts are missing first.  If its an unused fairly new hull it may be worth the time to put it together.  I wouldn't count on getting a great price on the parts you need or turning the boat around for a profit to get an outback.  Demo both boats to be sure you'd be happy with the revo.

Also, are you sure it's a revo?  No drive or rudder could mean quest 13.

Go for the Revo.  As RimFireMatt said, with $375 for the hull, you could get into a turbo-finned mirage drive and a sailing rudder for just around $1000.  The Revo is the best all-around fishing Hobie.  I love mine.
