ok ya am new at this, maybe they are called ram? ball mounts... am on the verge of getting some gear tracks for my hobie  possible I may end up getting both styles of mounts, ball for fish finder but not sure for fishing rod....if I end up using ball mount for a fishing rod will it "hold" and not slip while trolling? which is/has been found to be most preferred way to go with? am liking the idea of a gear track so when not in use kayak(hobie revo) does not have a bunch of stuff on it. also any regrets on placement of your goodies? especially the revo owners? anything you wish you had done different?

I love the ball mount for my fish finder, but the best I have found for rods is the Scotty with the slip disks.  Actually, my rod holder is kind of a Frankenstein model.  It is the Ram Rod Light Speed rod holder attached to a Scotty Adjustable Rod Holder Extender 459 and Scotty mount.  It is rock solid but with the slip disks, it is far more adjustable than the standard Scotty mounts.

True.  Also, don't forget to wash them.  The firm balls work well when they are clean.  However, for the balls that are slightly squishy, I've noticed that rubbing a little heavy grease on them actually may enhance their performance.

Doesn't greasing them make them sweat a little ? Not sure about sweaty balls.... ::) ::) ??? ???

After reading this string, I feel the need to scrub my soul clean with a Brillo pad and a cup of bleach!

I recently installed the YakAttack gear tracs and picked up a 1-1/2" YakAttack Screwball mount for my Humminbird.  On the Humminbird I have a short RAM extension arm.  The extension arm slips on the Screwball no matter how hard I cinch it down.  It did not slip on the RAM ball it was on previously.  I will try scratching my ball.  If that doesn't work I'll create some friction pads with a hole punch and some stair tape.

If scratching and stair tape does not give relief I'll have to replace it with a RAM RAP-383U.

The screwballs probably won't get better if you scratch them up.  The screwballs are the type of RAM balls that are slightly squishy(as I mentioned earlier).  I would just make sure they're really clean(the balls and the socket).  The scratching thing probably only works well on the older style RAM balls that are really firm and also shiny when they're new.  I haven't had any problems of slippage with stuff like my handheld gps or sounder when using the screw balls.  In fact, the newer style of RAM balls(slightly squishy) seem to hold much better than the older, really firm style in my experience.  Is your extension arm made of the composite plastic or the powder coated aluminum?

Aluminum, 9".  My old RAM ball is harder than the new Screwball and it never slipped.  If the new RAM balls are squishy like the Screwball than it will likely suffer from slippage also.  I am going to add a couple stair tape friction pads.
