Not necessary but REALLY helpful. Knowing speed of your drift and troll helps and being to find your way home in the fog is a huge plus. Additionally marking your favorite spots is nice.

I think it is honestly the one thing I really was missing on my yak. Went a couple of years without one, but now I wonder how I caught fish at all. Especially on big water, it makes it easy to find your way back and repeat a successful drift etc.  You can find low cost models, I have a Humminbird 365i , and it's great,  dual beam, gps etc. they make another model the 365ic , and it has a color screen, but uses more battery and cost about $75 more , I opted for the my model after some extensive price vs. function comparison. Also I know some are anti big business on here, but Amazon had the best price on it. ( I support small mom and pops all the time , but if it's gonna cost me an extra 75-100 bucks, amazon wins ). Bottom line, decide if it's worth it by the type of fishing you mostly do and whether or not it will be usefull, if your floating rivers or small lakes it may not be useful, on the salt or big water it's almost a must have. IMO
It's not the destination, but the Journey that makes life interesting!
