At some point, Hobie moved to a plastic/metal/plastic sandwich for the mirage drive drum to keep the pedal adjustment pin from stripping through the adjustment holes in the drum.  This mostly worked, but it's not a 100% fix.

Obviously it's stupidity on my part, but like a teenager in a camaro, I pushed a little too hard this weekend trying to see how fast I could get the Oasis to go with just me pedaling.  At 5.5 mph the pin blew through the drum, ripping some of the metal along with the plastic.

Mirage drives are great, but don't push them too hard, it gets expensive fast.

I'm hoping some epoxy will fix it.

Any of you fabrication and DIY experts have a recommendation on what I should use to try and fix it?

The replacement parts (spines?) are $20-30 depending on whether you have the V1 or V2 drive.  I stripped out one of the non-sandwich spines last year.  I probably caused the problem myself by lifting the drive by the pedal shafts and slightly depressing the pedal adjustment and retracting the pin halfway.  I replaced both of my spines and it took about 10 minutes.  I got one of the spines from Austin Kayak and the other from Hobie NW on Lake Union, Seattle.

Here's the thread.  You posted to it.

I wish mirage drive stripping was as sexy as it sounds.   ::)

I wanted to try and repair the part, but for $20-30 it's probably more cost effective and reliable to replace the part.

Got the Drum Friday and replaced it yesterday.  I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to disassemble the drive.  I was even happier when I found plenty of lubrication still inside all the parts and that rust/corrosion was nearly non-existent after over 2 years with only rinsing after use.  There was only mild corrosion evident inside the pedal shaft where the adjustment pin sticks through the shaft.

After I cleaned off all the old grease and re-greased it, put it back together with the new part, I found it moves even smoother now (I think the cables may have been over-tightened previously)

I used some red grease from west marine, hope this stuff holds up!  I remember someone mentioning blue grease but I couldn't find that.

I use Evinrude-Johnson triple-guard, waterproof grease (deep blue color like Evinrude motors) to lube all the pivot points on my old outboard motor and trailer wheel bearings.....it seems to work just fine on my Hobie mirage drive too....it does not wash out.
The stuff is marketed by Bombardier and was $6.00 for a 14 oz tube at Fisherman's Marine Supply the last time I bought it. :banjo:

Oddly enough, I stripped out my right drum (V1 drive) between hole #6 and #7 today during the HOW event on Lake Tanwax...it must be going around. I just pedaled around on #5 for the rest of the day but it sort of sucked so I'm off to order parts.

Demonick, just so I understand, did you use V2 Drums on a V1 drive...or are the replacement drums for the V1 drive plastic/metal sandwich?

Thanks for your help

No, I had a V2 drive with the all-plastic drums, so I used the V2 sandwich drum replacement. Sounds like a question for the vendor.  Austin Kayak has awesome customer service and will be happy to answer any question by phone and email.

Thanks, I'll call them tomorrow and see what they say...they're not too expensive so I may just order a set of both and do some experimenting.
