If you're dropping those flys down what is the weight of the fly line? Assuming it's a sinking tip..

I think most are running them on a dropper loop above a weighted jig.

I don't know what a dropper loop is but I assume it's something like a drop shot (what I use for perch with my kid).

Yup.  Same concept.

We had a post about shrimp flies awhile back..  while the concept is the same as a drop shot rig, the knot is different.

Here is a video on making dropper loops.
It's super easy.

Not a bad idea. I would guess you'd lose less gear in the rocks that way.

Not any more than fishing with the main jig, at that's the one that usually gets wedged.

Not really meant for a buggy whip. Use a spinning rig or bait caster set up, tie two onto about 24 inches of mono off droppers, add weight to the bottom of the leader, scent to the flies, tie onto mainline, drop into schoolies.  catch and repeat as needed.

same principle, substitue two bait holder hooks instead of flies, add herring or anchovies, or grubs, scent if needed. simple effective.

everything else you've seen or are gonna see on this thread works too.

don't forget to look for associated similar threads for ORC12, 11, 10, etc. plenty of great info there too.

Speaking of droppers,  I want to pre-tie up  a dozen or so dropper/swivel setups (no hooks until on the water).  What lb leader should I use?

I will be running 35lb+braid as my main line so I was thinking I should use 25lb mono.  Is this about right?

Edit: Also, if I want to tie in 2 loops, how far apart should they be?  I was thinking 1 - 2ft.

The dropper loop has a breaking point at about 60-70%, so when I actually do use one, I size up my leader.  Something like 40#.

2 feet is about right.

I started out using 20lb leaders, as I was wary of the potential difficulty of breaking off the 50lb braid on my mainline. Over the last year, I have found out two things; 1) 20lb is too light if you are going to use dropper loops,; 2) 50lb braid is not as hard to break off as I thought it might be.

Does anyone put "stinger hooks" on their jigs ?
I'm thinking short striking bait stealers might get connected better this way.

   Any thoughts ?????????
Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

yes, on the large jigs. they seem to work well on the tail biters.

Shrimp flies if you want to pick up some blacks. White, green and glow in the dark are my go to colors.

Hold the phone! Shrimp flies as in fly fishing? If this is the case I will have to bring down the fly gear. Sorry I am completely new to the rockfish and saltwater fishing. So I will be In this thread pretty hardcore!!

The shrimp flies in the picture are the danielson shrimp flies. I like em, but they are not expensive shrimp flies that one may be using in fly fishing. These are specific to bottom fishing.
You can use pretty much any type of shrimp fly, but I would leave the expensive hand tied stuff at home. Snags are not uncommon and I don't feel bad loosing a 80 cent rig (2 flies, leader, and swivel) as opposed to a couple dollar single fly.

Ok gotcha the tackle lingo I would say is the steepest learning curve when it comes to picking up fishin as an adult. Afghanistan sucked most of my ability to remember names out of my head I will often times spend 20 min in the tackle aisle trying to pull up NWKA conversations in order to remember people's recommendations, then because I have know idea what things look like being I have never used them before I have to grab and often track down the dude working there so I can find stuff. Without this site I would have no clue what to attach to the other end of my line. Fly fishing I often ask the local fly shop for the hatch anyways on the way out so I just buy as I go.

Trying to build my spinning tackle up from my 4 trout lures right now. I really just need to go on a shopping spree but can't get the wife to allow it. I just got my salt water rod and reel set up and somehow during moving last week it has located itself in the bathroom while i look for it a safe home. So everytime I take a shit I am In-visioning that pink run this year.

Thinking of putting on a small fly tying workshop at ORC this year. It would be great if people brought materials & expertise for this purpose.

I like to fish with 65# braid and 30-50# mono... depends on how snaggy it is.  I mostly just fish jigs.
