Plan:
1. Catch more than those other guys
2. Roll in all the cash   ;D

This is for the honor of our state so we should work as a team if possible.  I don't care which of us end up representing our top three catches as long as they are bigger than the other states.

From my understanding this is by length and not weight and it's the best two fish per person so getting two medium sized fish is going to be better than just one large fish.  For example catching two 16 in rainbow trout are better than catching  only one 31 in lake trout.  If this was by weight it would take probably 5 of these rainbows to beat the lake trout.

People who don't want to travel far might want to hit up their local trout fishery for more certain numbers of medium sized trout.  We should keep an eye out on recent plantings, esp the "trophy" class and broodstock ones.  If anyone has a favorite lake they should take advantage of their local knowledge.

That said we should still try for some large trout. I think our best bets are in Central and Southern Oregon.

In Central Oregon someone should go after really big lake trout (Macinaw) in Central Oregon (Lake Odell or Cresent Lake).  Jigging is probably the best bet.  Anyone up for this?

In Southern OR it would be good if someone was willing to chase monster redbands in the Upper Klamath Lake.   I think that lake also has Macinaw.  Anyone up for this?

I need to find out the status of summer steelhead for this competition.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Thats why im gonna catch two 31 inchers.

Anyhow, I want to hit Odell or Crescent for sure. The catch rate seems Rare at odell and much higher catch rate at Crescent according to ODFW fish finder site:

http://rainbow.dfw.state.or.us/fishfinder/

Click on location search on the left menus, then click the area with madras and bend in it, then click klamath county at the bottom of that area. Then select the lake from the dropdown and submit, then click on the lake trout link..

Odell and Crescent are only 3 miles apart so maybe hit both !!
See ya on the water..

As far as I can tell steelhead are considered trout for this contest.

Just looking at the Willamette summer run steelhead... it seems that their daily count over the Willamette falls peaks in lake May/early June.  If this is true this could potentially be a great option for us.   Anyone have any other intel on this fishery?

Get a couple 18-20 inchers out of the way on Saturday somewhere, then swing for the fences on the Willy on Sunday.

Personally I think we should split up and send a few guys out to a few places to cover all our bases.  I personally still would like to try for some lake trout and this seems like a good excuse, but for those who don't want to make the long drive I'm hoping we have good alternatives closer to home.

This is after all just a planning discussion.

No mackinaw in Upper Klamath Lake (it is a very shallow natural lake with a big fringe of wetlands), but some giant redbands.

My other suggestion would be big bass at Davis Lake (do our part to cull the population and stock the freezer).  See:

Unfortunately work and prior plans for that weekend will limit my fishing to Sunday morning until about 2 at the latest. I'm not too familiar with the hot spots around here. If the OR team has a couple of suggestions for me about a good place Sunday morning that isn't too far to drive, I'll be happy to contribute as many fish inches as I can.

lemme see, trout season and a steelhead/chinook season open on the Chetco the 24th.
May have to try and swing up to Gold Beach and hit the lower Rogue from here, which is open for fin-clipped steelies all year.

I believe the rules limit the applicable species to trout and char....

Of course Salmon aren't legal for the KAFF but Steelhead are sea-run rainbow trout, so are legal.
