Just a head's up that the annual Lake WA trout tourney is coming in a few weeks. The link below has the info, just click on the trout derby tab at the top. Entry is $20 and can be done online. Just get your entry paid by 6/13, fishing starts at 5 AM and make the weigh-in by 2pm on Saturday 6/15 at the Renton ramp. They'll have a BBQ and some other stuff going on, swag give away and all that. Cash prize list $300/first, $200/second, $100/third.

And don't get fooled into thinking that the PBs have the advantage in this fishery with all their downriggers and expensive gear. Brad and I smoke them all the time. Kayak presentations are silent and deadly for this fishery. PM me and I'll get you set up with the basics, discuss strategies, or come out and fish with us anytime. We can team up on tourney day to work several productive locations. I'd love it if a kayak fisherman won this derby, so the more of us out there the better.

And...nailed them again this past Monday.

AOTY wins: 2013 (2049 points), 2015 (2026 points)

This looks like a nice tournament to have a HOW and NWKA presence. Anyone else doing this one?

Sadly the derby is the same day as my commencement so I won't be able to make it this year.  I would love to see a contingent of NWKA show up to rock the tournament.  Since the Lake Washington chapter opened the derby up to the public, and especially since Yaktrap and Brad started posting their endless stream of Lake Washington trout porn, I've thought this would be a good tourney for a kayaker to win.

I'd love to join in for this! I'm still figuring out how to get deep enough trolling without a downrigger, but it sounds like fun.

I think I can make the derby. I've never fished way down there.

That's the misconception - you don't need downriggers to catch these fish all the time. We NEVER use downriggers for them.

I got them last Monday as shallow as 5 feet in 12 feet of water. The troll speeds are so slow you can use snap weights, leadcore line....lots of other light/cheap things that will get your presentation down just a bit into the bait.

I contacted John Vraspir and got the green light to set up a tent and table for HeroesOnTheWater at the event. We are always looking for ways to build awareness.

We will also be promoting NWKA and hopefully we can get a good number of members out there.

I plan to fish from 5am to 10am (hopefully I have a decent fish by then) and set up the booth.

I will have HOW shirts and NWKA stickers for sale if anyone is interested. Proceeds go to HOW NWest, come out and show your support.

I'm going to try and make it also.  Maybe follow Yaktrap and Brad around and really learn how to fish!
Was wondering if you guys are planning to launch from Coulon Park or somewhere else? - been avoiding that place due to high parking ($20?) fees, and launching from a kayak launch next to Boeing on the Cedar River.
