Hi Guys, What is a good ff in the $300-$400 range to mount on my Revo? Is color necessary? Is the DSI worth consideration?

Thanks in advance, Rob

Tons of great info on here on that. The search function is your friend :)
I use the Lowrance Elite 4 and I love it. Color screen and GPS makes it very sweet. You can get it for around 300.
I don't have DSI but from what I hear its more of a pain in the rump than its worth. Transducer needs to be in the water (not inside kayak) and I've heard the DSI doesn't work worth a lick deeper than 40 ft. I know there are a couple threads on this floating around.

Where and what type of fishing are you wanting to do? Color is cool but not required. GPS is a really nice feature also. Being able to see your speed when trolling and just having it as an additional safety feature is great. Especially if you plan to get off the coast at some point.

Here are some options for you. The Lowrance Mark 4/Elite 4 units are popular, as are the Hummingbird 300 and 500 series machines. I Had a Mark 4 B&W DSI machine and didn't like it. It was hard to read in the most common Oregon weather (rain or bright sunshine) and I didn't think the it offered good bottom detail in over 40 feet of water. I now have the Hummingbird 386 and am very happy with it. I wouldn't mind having a larger screen but I didn't want to spend the extra money to get it. The Lowrance Elite 5 also looks like a great unit and you can get some killer deals on them lately.

With my DSI I didn't notice any difference whether in the water or shooting through the hull. I don't think it matters.

I have a Humminbird 365i and I love it! It doesn't have color, but for me thats not a big deal, color is harder to see in bright light and it uses more battery power, to backlight the screen. The gps is very important if you go off shore. Plus like Noah said it is really handy to know how fast your going when trolling. I got my ff from Amazon, It was just so much cheaper and it came as a package deal with the through hull transducer mount. I find that the only thing that I miss with the through hull mount is that my water temps are a bit higher, maybe 3-4 degrees, everything else I see just fine. Hope this helps!

Another thing about a GPS is it will display your true course regardless of the variation from your heading due to current and wind.  If you are setting up a drift it is very useful to see what adjusting the rudder and raising or lowering the flippers does to the direction and speed of your drift. Those flippers held vertically below the boat create a very effective skeg.  If you wind drift backwards remember the rudder works in reverse when it is leading the boat.

When you are hunkered down fighting wind and current, the waves are washing over the bow, and it seems you are not moving, it is comforting to glance at the GPS and discover you are actually doing 2 kts and it will only be a couple hours until you beach.

I also have the Humminbird 365i, and I got the gel cell battery pack that Humminbird sells for $50 to power it. I mounted the unit and battery to a tool box so it is essentially portable. The transducer is on an aluminum bracket that can be bent and clamped to practically anything. You won't be the envy of anyone, but it works and is relatively inexpensive.
