Some of you may have seen hints about this on Facebook and I even mentioned it briefly in another post.

This is the latest kayak from Old Town (a sister company of Ocean Kayak).

Two models...

a 13 ft Predator 13 designed for lake fishing in mind.   The Predator 13 has a small mod pod hatch from the Tetra Angler series and a large transducer scupper from the Ultra series

LENGTH  13' 2"
WIDTH    33.5"
WEIGHT  82 LBS
SEAT WIDTH 21"
SEAT HEIGHT 15"
LEG LENGTH 48"
BOW HATCH 16.5"X10.5"
MAX CAPACITY 400LBS - 425LBS

a 12 ft Predator MX with a bit more rocker designed for river fishing
LENGTH  12'
WIDTH    34"
WEIGHT  68 LBS
SEAT WIDTH 21"
SEAT HEIGHT 15"
LEG LENGTH 48"
BOW HATCH 14"X7.5"
MAX CAPACITY 375 LBS - 400LBS

The NWKA based Ocean Kayak Prostaff are going to test these out on a multi-day float down the John Day River fishing for smallmouth at the end of the month. We'll be sure to report back how they did.

Almost forgot, I believe one of these is going to be the grand prize this year for AOTY and maybe even the grand prize for one of the other tournaments later this summer.  Stay tuned for more on that.

MSRP?

How would they be expected to handle the salt?

Would I be off base by saying that the Predator looks like it's designed to compete against the Jackson Coosa?

Cool looking boat. Do you know why they picked the the Old Town brand and not OC? Trying to appeal to more bass fishermen?

Yes, the deck and seat are influenced by some of the newer kayaks out on the market now like the Jackson and Hobie PA.  The target audience is the kayak bass angler with a wider more stable kayak with a cushy seat.    They just need to have a sparkly gel coat option and it would be no brainer.

Below the waterline however, I expect to more influenced by Ocean Kayak and Old Towns years of experience designing kayaks.  I don't expect the Predator to be a squirrely as say a Jackson Cuda.

As for MSRP..

$1299 on the Predator 13
$1199 on the Predator Mx

Very cool design. I never paid much attention to Old Town with OK and Wilderness Systems around, but that Predator looks pretty darn nice.

I would say yes, the target is bass anglers and I'm guessing the Old Town brand has more traction with people living inland.

I really don't blame them, I have had the following conversation at least a half dozen times at places like the Next Adventure Summer Splash demo day..

Billy Bob:   <stares at my kayak>
Me:  How's it going?  Do you fish much?
Billy Bob:  Yeah, I've been considering getting a fishing kayak.  Oh this is an "Ocean Kayak", well,  I'm really just looking for something for my local lake.   I have no plans of getting eaten by a shark.
Me:  No, that's just the company name, you can use these fishing kayaks just about anywhere; lakes, ponds, rivers, and yes the ocean too if you wanted .... <rest of my pitch>

I'm not sure yet.  They are wide and super stable but probably a bit slower then I'm used to in my Ultra 4.3.  The seat is very adjustable and the low position should put your center of gravity on par with a more traditional SOT seat.

That's still much lighter then the 138 lb Hobie Pro Angler 14 or the 120 lbs of the PA 12.  It seems to be on par with the Jackson Cuda 14 at 80 lbs.

I'd compare the 13 more against the Ride 135.
And the MX against the Coosa.

This is a purpose built kayak ... freshwater, or salt flats ... standup fishing ... for the 13.  Moving water for the MX ... still standup-able.  The 13 addresses a huge part of the fishing market, fresh water bass and salt redfish and trout.

You're not going to build a skinny lightweight kayak for these applications.  That's just the way it is.

It's good to see a diversification in the Johnson Outdoors product lineup.

The sell sheet and the old town website state that the 13 is 72 pounds not 82.

The correct number is 82# ... for now.  The early run is coming in heavier than original estimates.  With any new manufacturing, there is some variance, so 82 is the "safe" number.
