I'm a kayak instructor/guide - help convert me to kayak fishing!!!  anyone in Olympia want to show me the ropes?  I have an enclosed kayak, plus a double seater, and want to learn to fish possibly fly for Salmon.  In return I can teach kayak surf skills, rolling, etc.  I too have WAF issues!

welcome to the growing madness that is this sport, Kiwi.. tho i don't really have WAF/ GAF issues, [you have my sympathies  ;D]....i'm sure we have plenty of members here who will be more than willing to share or take you up on your offer.

this is a great group of guys.. they freely share what others would horde when it comes to information..

hang on for the ride, and enjoy.

Thanks Rich I look forward to meeting any Olympia to Seattle locals.  I love to kayak the northen wa coastline Neah Bay, Cape Flattery area whenever I can.  Looking for some close to home spots to learn to land a salmon from a yak.

Welcome Kiwi..  I too have a sit-in rather than a sit-on type of kayak.  But for either type, one of the first things you'll need is a place to put that fishing pole while you're paddling.  When I first started, I would cram the pole against the cockpit and a bent knee- not only bad form but doesn't work well with the power a salmon can strike with.  So, consider your paddle stroke and where you can mount a pole holder that won't interfere, but will be in easy reach.  Lots of guys use Scotty pole holders, but the main thing is having a permanently mounted base with a holder that is removed when not fishing.  Scotty does make a pole holder for fly fishing so make sure you get the right model.  Anyway, thats a start-- like I said welcome and use the forum-- it's a great resource!   ;D ;D

Welcome Kiwi, yer from my old stompin grounds.Lived in Oly from '73-'81, in my childhood. We used to fish on the sound alot in our 19 foot bayliner.

Great place to grow up, back then. Last time i saw it  4-5 years back, I was amazed at how much it grew.
See ya on the water..
