Hey can anyone tell me where to look for a hobie? I am looking for my nephew and we are leaning towards a outback. Anywhere local to by new or used?

Thanks for the help.

According to the Hobie dealer locator. Next Adventure is the closest.

Outdoor play and kayak shed have some discounts for various items mentioned on nwka, but i dont know if they apply to hobies. Hobie seems to control their prices pretty well. All the shops have them advertised for the same price as Next Adventure. All 3 shops have great cutomer service though.

Unless you're able to find a demo that a dealer wants to sell, some of last year's stock, or go to Ballard inflatable boats, you aren't likely going to find a dealer that'll give a discount on a new boat.  It's the wrong time of year for most demos and last year stock.  If you buy new, you'll probably get a discount on any accessories you also buy.  If you want used, stalk craigslist.  It can be a while until something you want comes by at a decent price.  These kayaks hold their value remarkably well and I honestly can't say if saving a few hundred bucks is worth missing out on the great waranty and not knowing the boat's history.

+1...I bought my Outback from Ballards but when it came time to honor the warranty they were quick to point out that they weren't an authorized Hobie dealer and couldn't help me.
In the end, Hobie is replacing my Hull but I had to work it directly with the company (they were awesome)...If I had to do it again (and I plan to) I would have just bought a new boat from a standup Authorized dealer.

The closest dealer to you is Next Adventure in Portland, like Younggun mentioned.  As Younggun also mentioned, Hobie does keep the prices tight so it's rare to find a discount on new boats.  Next does sell older models at a discount once or twice a year so you'll have to be patient to get those deals.  You can call Next Adventure to setup demos if you can make it to the Portland area.  Good luck!

I just bought a Hobie PA 14 recently. Next Adventure was very helpful, and I ended up picking up a bunch of gear from them. But when it came to buying the boat, Kayak Shed in Hood River made it worth my time to drive out there; nobody in the area could match their delivery time and willingness to eat the shipping cost. Scappoose Bay is the only other dealer near Portland that I found.

If the boat/color you want isn't in stock, it could be a fairly lengthy wait for area dealers to put together a larger order to cut shipping costs, or you'll have to offer to pay a $400-$500 single-boat shipping fee. (At least that's what every dealer I talked to quoted me.)

John at Kayak Shed got it to me in six days at no extra cost. Also, just a really nice guy.

Thanks everyone. We will buy new for the warranty reason, makes sense. He likes the red outback. I think it is a good visible color as well. I have a PA 14, to bad they don't make that in red it would be sweet.

I have heard good things about kayak shed and next. Now to decide which???

Thanks again

If you don't mind to do some driving, there is a brand new 2011 red outback for $1299 at Mountain Gear located at Spokane. This store discontinued the Hobie line a couple years ago. One catch- there is a good size scratch on the hull. The number is 509-325-9000.
