maybe too much to ask... would like to see a tech/tips forum? more terminal gear ....fishing rods /reels/line/ rigs/bait setups, since orc is coming up, mentioned rockfish originally but  goes for all waters specifically geared to the kayak fisherman/woman, forum would be on all species, what do the powers at be here say/think?

Ask 10 people, get 10 different responses, followed by 6-8 pages of arguing.  ::)

Get a leadhead jig that is heavy enough to get near the bottom you are fishing on the line you are using, put something on it, jig. It's all pretty much variations from there.

1oz jig with 3" grub, cast, let it sink, reel in a rockfish.

Or, fish for Lings and tie a dropper fly on your line, then catch them.

There are a lot of opinions for sure. I'm not shy. Here's what I use in 120 feet of water or less for lings rocks cabs.

Rods
8 1/2 foot Ugly Stik Medium Action (I think this is a salmon rod)
7 foot Shimano Trevala Jigging Rod (This one is my go to for rocks, lings, cabs)
7 foot Ugly Stik Tiger Heavy (overkill backup rod)

Reels
Abu Garcia Revo (40lb braid)
Abu Garcia C4 5600 (this is my favorite for bottomfish with 40lb braid)
Avet MXL (65lb braid and this is way overkill)

Leaders: 20lb mono

Jig heads: 1.5-6 oz lead jig heads depending on conditions.

5-8 inch grubs like Kalin's Mogambo in Root Beer, Gold Flake and White
4-5 1/2 inch Big Hammer swimmers
4-6 inch Scampis in same colors as grubs

just seems like there is everything here but a tech/tips forum specific for kayak fishing, for all species of fish and everywhere  i.e.....lakes/big rivers (Columbia and its tribs. / snake river) to at least northwest ocean species to san juans and beyond. I sure appreciate and like this website...awesome fricken website!

The discussion of what type of gear to use for the ORC comes up every year in the weeks leading up to the event.  Try using the search function to reference those old threads - you'll find lots of info on what gear to use.  Or just do a search for topics about Depoe Bay in general.

I think the reason there isn't a general Tech Tips thread is because every area that people spend a lot of time kayak fishing has its own gear that works best.  Ocean bottom fishing though seems to be the one exception.  What works off the coast of Neah Bay will probably work off the coast of Depoe Bay, as well as Sunset Bay.  The recommendations that members have made in the last week are right on so stick with that advice and you'll be fine.

When it comes to jigging, I use the same rod and reels as well as rubber and jig heads on the kayak as I do on the motor boat

I have used "search" on gear and what not for stuff and have found a lot of info, but seems it would be easier to create a technics and tips type forum not on just rockfish but all species, all waters. a lot of what I have found were others asking questions for what they were fishing for as well.

Ooops, I was thinking about the wrong thread.  I thought this was one of the ORC Tackle discussions.

I think that the dam painter has a solid point. But I agree that it's a hard challenge to address. Rawky's mention of geographic differences is why. Something like the kayak shack but devoted to terminal tackle? Is that what your were thinking, dam? Site-mapping-wise, it could be a cluster.  Mixing technique with body of water...could get crazy.

But it's worth pondering. Say someone wanted advice on trout trolling rigs for Odell lake. Does the current setup facilitate such a question? Maybe? The regional sections are full of that stuff.

I'm gonna go drink more wine and think about it.

One of the main things that turned me off about Oregon Fishing Forum was that the site was broken apart into so many different sections, but I guess that was the extreme end of the spectrum.  They have it broken down into species as well as specific boards for popular fishing locations.  It seemed too extreme a level of granularity to me.

I'm just glad somebody else went to the time and trouble of perusing the other fishing forums and is willing to report back.

I've never bothered with them (ok I peak in on NCKA every so often) because I get everything I need right here!

The fact is search is only useful if the persons writing spelled correctly and actually the same terms you search for. Was that "lingcod", "ling cod", "rockfish", "rock fish", crabpot, "crab pot", Depo, Depot, Depoe, ....?

Isn't that part of the beauty of fishing? Figuring out the perfect    presentation and the proper rod and reel for the job? Hints are great but so is going out and figuring out what works best for you.

In general it is easy to find tips for bottom fishing. However there probably are some specific tips for getting baits down low for trolling with a kayak. When I started I had a mentor but all we ever fished was big species. So when I shot into the dark for other things I spent a lot of trial and error (and money) figuring out what worked best for a given situation. I read lots of bad advice too.. but general tips I find useful to this day. Therefore I don't mind sharing my ideas so that someone else can get set in the right direction. On this forum a lot of people brush things like these subjects off and beat you to death with safety instead. In some cases so much it turns people away from the activity to a degree.
