Anyone have any experience with fishing the ocean side of the south jetty?  i've done it a few times from a PB, but was curious what the currents/launch zone were like for the kayak.

Just my observations - one could launch from the beach (after a bit of a hike) by the jetty (ocean side) and stay tucked in close too the jetty during a NW swell and stay fairly protected.  spend the morning jigging the jetty never getting any closer to the sunken portion of the jetty than 300-500 yards to make sure to stay out of the river currents.

i'm curious to hear anyones experience with this section of water - potential for rip currents along the jetty, prefered fishing times (incoming/outgoing tides), and any other potential safety issues.

We attempted to fish that exact location this past weekend.  Even from a powerboat it's a lot of work.  The depth goes from about 30 feet (river side) to to 15 feet (sunken jetty) to nearly 90 feet (south side of jetty).  After dropping my jig about 30 times I figured out there were always 2, and sometimes 3 different currents in the area.  Saturday around 3pm there was a surface current going south at like 3-4 mph, then under that was another current going north at 2-3 mph, and on the south side of the jetty there was another current going east, really fast, fast enough to suck my 8 ounce jig horizontally without me ever touching the bottom.

I'm sure there are some slack times when you could fish it really well, but it doesn't seem worth it to me.  BUT, I've fished the north jetty many times, and it's WAY easier and very productive.  Just stay away from the sunken portion of it at the west tip, it always seems to produce large breakers even if the swell is 1 ft.

that was close to my experience on a PB for the sunken portion of the jetty - best to fish the sunken portion during a incomming tide with no south wind...and only from a PB, i would never dream of hitting that area on a kayak.

just ball parking, but it seems the south jetty goes out about 2 miles or so, and i would think the currents a mile back from the sunken portion on the ocean side would be calm...unless the river caused some sort of eddy right there.  but definatly one of those spots you dont want to "just try out" without knowing for sure how the water acts...get sucked up in the river current there, and your in for a ride.
