I took it upon myself to form a one-man welcoming party for the 2013 Coho run and headed west to greet them. I avoid all the pre-4th of July nonsense at Hobuck and just pay for some parking down the road and bush camp for a few days. I travel light, and leave nothing but footprints behind. I don't bring a tent, just roll up in a tarp with a light bag. After some cowboy coffee in the morning its back on the water where I spend most of my daylight hours moving from cove to cove and bait ball to bank. If I do cook a meal it's usually some small fish flavored with some other items I scrap off the rocks, but mostly its cold rice meals out of a Tupperware. Not your luxury camping trip and good luck convincing the wife or girlfriend that it will be fun, but when it comes to getting out there where the fishing action is hot there's no better way.

I got into Coho every time I put a line in the water on top of marks. They were stacked up out there just north of Makah Bay in 100 to 200 feet of water, from the Waatach point to Green Wall. I went out 5 miles to the west of Tatoosh to some offshore banks that I know very well but all the bait is tight on the beach. Seems things haven't changed since halibut opener.

Conditions up a the cape are highly variable with a nasty west wind coming up in the afternoons. With compounding swell directions this time of year the result is washing machine conditions with peak heights up to 10 feet in the gaps you need to get thru to find a landing spot. Get to know that area well during calm periods if you have any doubts. Believe me when I say your life depends on it. This is not a place to make a single mistake.

Yaktrap, great report. That looks like a great way to camp to me. I'm living vicariously through your report.

Was gonna stick these in too but it got out before I did.

Lots of caves and beaches have freshwater streams running down off the rocks right now. They'll dry up later in the summer, but they make for nice showers in the mean time.

Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent
