Here's a little taste of the Smallmouth fishing to be had on the John Day.  Hope you enjoy!

Yeah, that area is beyond words.  Great SMB fishing, lots of great rock walls to dive off of and a real high desert feel.  Those Predator yaks were the perfect tool for the venue.  Lots of storage room, great tracking in the rapids and you could spend the entire day standing for better casting distance and accuracy.

Yup.  Even my tall, balanced-challenged ass had no issues standing up and sight flipping to holding smallies.  I think I'm going to like this standing up business.

Yeah, I wouldn't play that too loud in this part of Oregon, you might attract wildlife you wouldn't want to see.

Cool vid! I am thinking back... not sure I've ever gotten a double-hookup smallmouth - good times!

It's killing me that I haven't done the JD yet... smallmouth are probably my favorite freshwater gamefish and one of the best fisheries in the country is in my backyard... got to make time for that!

My experience has shown that you need water that is 2-3' deep before a PFD can be used to full effect. A helmet, sturdy sandals and sunscreen would do more to keep you safe on the John Day, especially the sunscreen this time of year. People underestimate how hot and exposed to the sun you are. Severe sunburn can happen to lily white PacNWesterners in an hour or two.
Unless you should run into a guide driftboat battle. Some of those dudes think they own the river and can get pretty testy.

Just messin', I know how shallow that water is.  If I'm wearing the Safety Cop Hat then I'm going to have some fun with it.   ;D

Actually, we were pretty good about wearing our PFDs during this trip, despite the shallow water and hot temperatures.  There was a professional photographer with us taking photos for things like product brochures and they wanted us to wear our new Extrasport PFDs for product placement and for the appearance of being safe.

I have to admit that I only wore my PFD when the photog said I had to.   The water was warm, the rapids inconsequential and the air temp was 100+ every day.  I'll post a vid of me stand-up paddling the Predator tonight if I find the time.
