I just came across this kayak on "Kickstarter". This is a site where you can make early investments in companies that have an idea or hve completed a prototype design and are trying to take it to the marketplace like the DFP (dive, fish, paddle) platform.  If this kayak had a Mirage Drive I would have to have one. Even without it however it still looks very interesting.   Some very nice innovation put to work here.

Neat looking yak.  Somehow, though, I'm doubting they'll get to their goal.  20 of 35 days already gone by, and not even $8000 of their $150k goal.

That said, they do have a couple decent advertising photos on that site.

The built in pontoons is a sweet idea. I wish them good luck on reaching their goal of 150k. They are almost there  >:D

They are going to have a rough go. Everyone and their cousin is building a stand up kayak.

A few years ago they might have stood half a chance.  It's like trying to start up a micro-brewery now.  Occasionally someone gets it right (e.g. Ninkasi) but the market is pretty well saturated already which makes breaking in really hard to pull off.

That is pretty interesting. I'd love to get in one and see how it feels.

Why? Personally I don't get the infatuation with trying to make an unstable platform such a kayak as stable as possible.
If you want a small stable boat. Buy a john boat. They cost about the same amount and are way more stable.

Innovation is a Good Thing, regardless of if I think it's useful to me personally. I like the idea of the "wings" for stability but only when you need them, and much less in the way than amas that fold to the sides. There's a lot of people/situations where stability would be valued above speed or other tradeoffs (think fly fishing for bonefish in Florida). By your logic SOTs wouldn't be around either, right?

In my mind the defining characteristic of kayaking is the freedom (don't need a big vehicle or tens of thousands of dollars, can take it almost anywhere, can fish for almost anything), not the lack of stability.

I got a chance to test paddle the prototype of these yaks a few weeks back.

Super stable boat, almost reminiscent of the new Predators in shape and function.  Not sure the sponsons are even needed.  They've spent a lot of time thinking through the details, from the side rails, to the hatches, to the livewell/tank mount.  It will be interesting to see what happens ...

I certainly would wish them well.  If I had the money I might buy one just to see what it's like and to support a new startup.  But, I don't.

If the defining characteristic of "kayaking" is easy access to water then wouldn't an inner tube be just another form of kayaking?

If you want to stand and fish buy a boat design that is intended for standing. Not a kayak that is designed for sitting but then modified to allow you to stand.
Walmart sells plastic Jon Boats for 500 bucks. Instead of a mirage drive it uses an electric motor or oars. Call it a redneck ProAngler.

So far Hobie is the only one that calls this latest trend of sit down vessel what it actually is .... A boat.

For the record, I said "freedom" not "easy access". You seem pretty wrought up about this. Did a stand-up angler outfish you or something?  I joke! I joke! I keed!

But seriously, who cares? Call it a long skinny boat. I think there's room in Club Kayak for that type of fishing but I don't think anyone really cares if it's called a canoe or a raft or a floaty-thingy.

What a complete oversimplification Bill!

I would not put a John Boat up on my car roof by myself.  I would not take a John Boat down the John Day River.  I would not take a John Boat on the open ocean.  I can not cruise in a John Boat at 3.5-4 mph.  I can and would do all of the above in say, a Predator, a kayak design intended for standing.

:D
Gross over simplifications make it a lot easier to form an argument founded solely on the desire to see a new kayak introduced that is designed for my preferred type if fishing.

.... Or maybe I should take up bass fishing.

The perfect ocean fishing kayak would be a mirage drive driven T13..... In my opinion.

I hear Jim Sammons is working on a new kayak for Jackson.  Why don't you talk to him?   >:D
