From your first pic, I was also thinking steelhead.

This may sound odd, but how did it taste?
I think Steelhead tastes "trouty" and coho tastes "delicious".

*This probably isn't the best way to determine the species of everything you catch.  ;D
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

I wonder why steelhead tastes 'Trouty' ....

Personally I think coho is so-so. I've had chum that I prefer over coho.

I can't remember the thread, but I believe you ranked your opinion on different salmon species as far as taste goes. If I recall correctly, was it Columbia River springer first or second?
Could you please elaborate on your ranking and what the logic is behind the taste difference? If I recall it had to do in part with texture and oil content, but again, I can't remember which thread it was burried in to look it up.

Good kings are my favorite table fare that is based on oil content. Yukon river kings have the highest fat of any salmon. Columbia springers are number 2 Copper river #3.
Some runs of chum have high fat content and are pretty damn tasty for the money.

I think I caught a steelhead this morning off Boeing Creek on a 2" pink buzz bomb with a 1.5" hoochie with a spinning rig.  I was taking a break from trolling.  White mouth and gumline, sharp teeth, spots on back and both lobes of tail.  At first I thought it was a coho, but the spots on the tail threw me.

Is this unusual?

Good eye - 28-1/2" 7 lbs.

How did it taste?

Like a trout or pink salmon, but not like a chinook nor coho.
