I would say....  But.... you guys already know what a Safety Cop is going to say...  :police:  ;D

If someone tells me they kayak fish on the ocean alone, and they don't have more than a couple of years of experience kayaking in the open ocean, it makes me a bit nervous for their safety.

i don't fish on the ocean period because their are to many risk including boats tides and every ones favorite the weather(changes on a dime) it is a lot safer to go in a group though because everyone is looking out for each other and if a miss hap does happen you will have the needed help

Well, i recommend it if the choice is go alone or not fish.. Of course it always seems safer with two or more.

Pretty much announce and go..The adventure awaits. I go alone alot, Just make sure someone knows i am going and try be more careful about everything. It's fun and a little scary(which is kinda fun too) .

And yes, the theme music from JAWS will subside after a while... ;) LOL, lots of time to think too much when there is nobody else to talk to out there... which is not a problem for me, ill just talk to myself..

See ya on the water..

It was my first trip today with my nephew and I thought it was just me and the jaws theme. Nice to hear it will fade in time. ;D

Where is Bill... I want to read about the necessity of a GWS rape whistle...

I go out alone... but I am not bold, I make sure someone knows where I am going... I take my cell phone (it is in a waterproof case around my neck)...

Someday I will own a VHF radio.

I have to agree with Roy,
Fish or stay home   ??? ::) ???  If you are comfortable in the conditions of the day--go for it. When weather is iffy--make sure you tell a significant other--someone who will be concerned when you don't show up when you say you will--and then notify authorities that can help.
A healthy respect for the ocean is wise-----living a paranoid life----very limiting.
This is coming from a man who has been kayaking since 1974, freshwater and salt---so maybe that doesn't count for much.

Life is short---live it tall.

Be kinder than necessary--- everyone is fighting some kind of battle.

Sailors may be struck down at any time, in calm or in storm, but the sea does not do it for hate or spite.
She has no wrath to vent. Nor does she have a hand in kindness to extend.
She is merely there, immense, powerful, and indifferent

Yes there are risks in the ocean, but the risks can be managed as many folks here do every time they go out on the Ocean. There are areas without boat traffic or tidal issues. Furthermore there are also boats (and jetskis and wakeboats) and other hazards in lakes and rivers (i.e. sweepers). People drown and die of hypothermia in rivers and lakes, its not just the ocean that can be lethal.

Man, it's been at least a month since Bill said rape whistle...I sort of miss it :)

My opinion is that if you have to ask you probably shouldn't do it.

i fish alone on the salt most of the time but there are a couple of things to consider. First, I am VERY cautious about the weather and tides--big tides= big rips around many of the places I fish, so I don't go then. Today I planned to go west of Sooke with a late start to let the fog burn off a bit but by the time I got to Otter Point, the wind was blowing about 15--fishable but I passed because in Juan de Fuca it usually comes up further as the day progresses. I drove back East to launch at a spot that is somewhat protected from the westerly instead. Secondly, I fish in areas where there are always power boaters within VHF range, which I always have with me--so I guess I am not truly "alone." i didn't carry a cell phone with me today because most places out where I fish are not in cell range. i will carry one in the future since i realized i had given my wife a trip plan which was outdated when I changed my plan and I could have phoned her with an update at one point during the morning.
