Some of us forget to look ahead for the best upcoming fishing opportunities  ::) ::) (usually this would be me).

However, looking at tide charts for the month of May, I was pleased to note an absolutely great high tide (read low flow) on the weekend of the 10th and 11th.  High tide is at 5:23 am (sorry about the get up time) from a previous low of 5.5- a differential of only .6 of 1 foot and Sunday's differential is only .5.

If you have an idea of fishing the salt next month-  this would be THE weekend to do it.

I'm beginning to think a hali trip to Freshwater Bay, just outside of Port Angeles might be the trip for me; but whatever your plans are you will have super tides for fishing the salt water on May 10th and 11th.

Fish hard, fish smart,

Rob.

Ooooh, I wish I could join you, but I would be crab bait, if I did. One good weekend on the salt, and I could put serious distance between me and everybody else, in the AOTY. >:D

If you can afford the gas, I suggest going a little farther west. Better chance of some other nice bycatch. ;)

I'm thinking the trip would start at P.A. but if the wind and ocean swell were cooperating-- Neah Bay could see a kayak or two.  As long as you're bottom fishing why not take out lings and cabezon as well.  ;D ;D

Don't limit yourself to just fish- there's some impressive mollusks out there, too.

You can check out last year's Memorial Weekend posts- http://www.northwestkayakanglers.com/index.php/topic,308.0.html

Those were some good posts Pisco; with you and Allen about how you rigged up for hali- I liked your idea using the jig as weight on the spreader.  I worry a little about snagging bottom with all the heavy gear/line as well- it's tough to get the leverage necessary to break it in a kayak.

I fished for hali up in the Queen Charlottes a couple of years ago and we used salmon bellies as well- those things are tough as nails.  Anyway, looking back at your posts I realize everything thats new to me is just old hat to you vets.   ;) ;D
Thanks-- Rob.

Just realized this is Mothers Day weekend--Duh.  Not sure I can dance fancy enough to get around this one--big sigh.

Just sorted out Mother's Day weekend with the wife and as long as I'm back by Sunday afternoon things will be cool.  So, if anyone wants to hit the salt water on the 10th and 11th-- I'll be at Freshwater Bay--just outside of Port Angeles Saturday --crack of dawn.

Yakker,

Don't get caught with that "jig on one line, bait on the other" rig in Canada.  The rules up there say that you can't be rigged where you could possibly hook two fish at one time.  I don't know about on the U.S. side, haven't got around to looking.

pg 102 of the new WA regs-
Quote
HOOK AND LINE ANGLING - Unless noted
differently, only one line with up to 2 hooks is
allowed. Barbless hooks are required for all
species in Marine Areas 5-13, except forage
fish jig gear. When fishing for SALMON in Marine
Areas 1-13, only single-point hooks may be used.

So, jig and bait works just fine, in WA.

Wow, so if I'm reading this right all fishing in the sound this season is barbless. Wow. Does anyone know why this came up? Or if this is how it's going to be from now on?

But salmon was intermittently barbless last year.

Or does a jig on one side and a bait on the other side of a spreader bar count as two lines.  Each hook is tied to the spreader bar by a separate line.

In Canada it's spelled out more clearly.  Something about how it can't be set up such that you might be able to hook two fish at once.

Yep. On the regs for Area 10 last year it was:

June1-30: barbless
July 1-15: no specification
July 16- Aug 15: Barbless
Aug 16- Nov 30: no spec
Dec1- Jan31: barbless

This year there's no mention of barbless in the area rules just overall. Oh well.. barbless it is from now on.
