I'm new to kayak fishing.  I used my boy's 10 Old Town Vapor to hit up a local lake since I've not been able to go fishing that much this year.

I found that when the lake is empty, I don't have to be too concerned with what's behind me and decided to simply row backwards as my knee held the pole in front of me ( I know, I know, can I say roldholders? ).

It really worked well, and I questioned whether a rold holder was truly a priority...maybe not.  Chuckle.

I'll be back to troll backwards again by this weekend.   Hehehe.

This technique works really well in a bunch of different applications.  I've actually caught a Coho at B10 doing this.

PS  The rod holder is a great way to hold the rod tip up while you're paddling backward.  Just tuck the butt under your butt.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.  --Mark Twain

It's a killer technique with a fly rod and reversed hobie drive.  With the long limber rod you can't impart a twitching action to the fly in a normal forward trolling position.  The rod flexes and absorbs the energy of the twitch.  Not a problem when you troll backwards with the rod in line with your flyline.  Keep the tip in the water for no slack.

It reminds me of my float tube days, but with the ability to quickly make milage when the wind and waves increase.  Trout, bass, steelhead, etc... it's deadly!
