Anyone planning on getting out for some Puget Sound lings during this short season (May 1 - June 15)?

Hell F'n yeah! Let me know when you're available as I'll be going out a bunch for both lings and flatties. Thinking of hitting up Thursday evening if I'm feeling ok and if the weather is too. BTW, is it legal to gaff lings?

Hey Z,

You can always come down to Oregon where you can gaff lingcod all year long.

Bsteves,

We also get to gaff them all year long in Wa. --- off of our west coast that is.

Fishin-T,

You may want to read up on your Washing fishing regs.  Every WA marine region has a specific season for lings and you are only allowed to gaff halibut, tuna, and dogfish sharks.

I find that a leather work glove does the trick.  Smaller ones I lip and larger ones I tail or grab by the gills.  Though, I must admit I haven't had to land any of the REALLY BIG ones.

Although I much prefer using a gaff you can go w/ a net or a lipper of some type. My choice is the Fish Grip. It grips, floats, and locks... best of all it's only $12.

Bsteves,

I kinda knew that as soon as I hit the "post" button.  Too quick to shoot from the hip.

Oh, well... I just net 'em and then make DAMN sure to keep the grizzly end of them towards the bow.  In the tiny cockpit of a kayak, the only other place his mouth can be is right between your legs.  I did have a good one bounce the net off the top of himself and then flopped right overboard, all while I was reaching for the bonker.  Yeah, keep one hand on the net.  The big ones are WAY strong.

Now that looks like a dandy tool--I'll be looking for one very soon.
