It's been a while since I've given a good report so I'm laying it on thick.   ;D

Saturday afternoon found me still scratching my head over where to splash the kayak on Sunday.  After tossing a few ideas around I decided to take the advice of a wise fishy dude and head west to join the crowd in the Columbia estuary.
I was greeted with a sunrise that seemed to say, "Dude, you'd better get out there!"

The water was covered with a chaotic powerboat mess.  It's funny to think that so many boats, each appearing to have a different game plan and heading in their own direction, were all after the same stinkin' fish.

I headed out and focused on covering some ground so when the tide started coming in I'd have a long distance to cover while it carried me back to the launch.  I came to a spot that a handful of boats had just motored to as if to reset their drift.  The current was still carrying me pretty well at this point so I put my herring to work.

For about 30 minutes I watched all the boats I was drifting with and it was pretty quiet.  Then a guide boat I was next to hooked up.  They brought the fish in fairly quickly while continuing to drift with the heard of boats and as just after they had it in the boat their other rod goes off.

Now I'm feeling optimistic.  About a couple minutes after they brought in their second fish my rod begins to demand my attention.
Boing... Boing...   ...Boing...
"C'mon...", I mutter under my breath.
Tug-Tug... Zooom!!!  With that, the beautiful sound of braid ripping through the level-wind rings out and I yank the rod out of the holder.  Yeeeee-HAW!!

The fish starts pulling me into oncoming traffic but luckily the boats behind me were paying attention.  That might have had something to do with the fact that I'm the only weirdo in out there in a kayak, but I was thankful regardless.  "You're going for a ride!", yells one of the power-boaters as I nod and grin.  After a short fight my chinook is in the net and I proceed to scoot out of the trolling lane.  As I was getting out of the way to deal with my catch I notice another guide boat near me was doubled up.

You could say she was "well hooked"

I changed up my lure and trolling tactics in hopes to find a coho, but none were found.

Overall it seemed the day wasn't on fire, but pretty good.  Everybody I chatted with had at least a take down or two and plenty of people were well on their way to limiting their boat.

And just how many people were out there?

And the pictures just don't do it justice.  Be careful out there!

Awesome report! Fishing has been off the chain for nooks this year.  Just finished canning 78 lbs of fillets = six cases of wide mouth pints.  It almost makes up for my little incident on the way home ::)

Great report Jeff, awesome fish!

You are nutz playing with all those boats.  It's like joining a Monster Truck rally in a Prius, but you showed them how to crush 'em anyways!

That tire doesn't look like it will work very well in that position.
Did you have some dumb ass run you off the road?  :o

Thank you Jeff for the awesome report and great video!

Ron, sorry to hear about your mishap on the road.  At least you had some good luck on the water. Wednesday will be my one and only chance at buoy 10.
