I'm trying to scope out new fishing areas...has anyone ever tried Lawson Reef approx. 3 miles west of Deception Pass State Park?

Only thing im worried about is very strong currents, but if timed right and on a good day...might be worth looking into?

Ill paddle out there in a few weeks and see what I can catch.

I'd intended to go out there for shrimp this year, but never did.  Rory said there's lots of fish on Lawson reef, but they were small.  Can't personally confirm that.

Anyway, watch your current tables and it shouldn't be too bad.

What are you intending to fish for?  Salmon, the (apparently extinct) Cabezon, shrimp, or something else?

I'd have to do some research on what zone that is, and what can be kept when...but the usual: lings/cab/rockfish/greenling, and possibly salmon.  I did hear that shrimping was good there, but im not interested in catching any of those.

Just looking for big fish!

Rockfish has been closed in Puget Sound for years.  Ling season is short, just 6 weeks in the late spring.  Cabezon is still open, as is greenling and other bottom fish like flounder/dabs/sole and surf perch.

Lawson Reef is part of the boundary between MA-6 and MA-7.  Know exactly where you are if there's differences in the rules between the 2.

I don't have the regs in front of me, but my recollection is they state "Smith Island to the bouy on Lawson Reef to Northwesd Is to the I-77 marker".

Thanks for the clarification. Previous post deleted.

I plotted the I-77 stripe in person at 48.420500° -122.667767°

The Coast Guards lists the Lawson Reef Buoy at:
48*24'3.316"N, 122*42'57.727"W
