I trolled for eight hours today with only one bite at around hour seven of my day. There were lots of boats fishing from the trestle to the North Bend bridge. I saw 15-20 fish landed...none of which were jacks. I'd say they were all 30 inches or bigger.
Some high lights of the day:
A lady caught a baby shark...about 18 inches long. She was so excited...this was the coolest thing I witnessed all day.

A power boat guy decides to make his turn around RIGHT in front of me. There is an obvious lane that all the other boats are sticking to...this guy doesn't think the rules apply to him. As he nearly runs me over his wife makes sure my flag doesn't tangle her line. I yell at them  and tell them I have just as much right to fish there and they can't bully me because my boat is small. They look at me and don't say a word so I assumed they didn't speak English. I shake my head and push off from their boat and go on my way. Later in the day the guy apologized in English...I didn't accept.

A guy in the crappiest boat on the water looks at me and says 'with the money you spent on that thing you could have bought a real boat!'
I laughed and said 'oh, like that piece of shit?'
He didn't say anything.

If you can't tell...I'm very cranky haha. It's been a week since I caught a fish and the long hours are killing my enthusiasm. It's so frustrating to see every boat around me hook up! I'm not giving up though. I'll be back at it tomorrow. I just wanted the local guys to know that there are lots of fish being caught right now. I saw as many fish lost at the boat as I saw landed. Seeing people fail made me feel a little better about not having any luck.  >:D

Good luck over the holiday weekend!

I feel your pain dude, just went through the longest dry spell I've had all year, 7 days and 42 hrs on the water with nothing to show for it, on the last day I weathered a storm that seemed like Poseidon and Zeus were fighting and I was in the middle of it, rained so hard my scupper holes couldn't drain the water fast enough.   It makes the good days better.
Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate day on the water with a couple boaters.  I had a whacked day today. But first last week I put in 17 hours of fishing I was skunked not a bite but saw fish being caught.  Then this morning I was at the BLM parking lot at 6:40 this morning my kayak was ready to be launched but the fog was thick as milk and hoping it would clear up a little. I agonized For 31/2 hours as I watched a lot of boats being launched while I camped out in the parking lot with my kayak. I felt like a fool. All I wanted was 200 to 300 yards and I would of been good with it.  I watched to many boats going to fast past the boat ramp under limited visibility not knowing or caring what is considered a safe speed is. So I loaded up the kayak and called it a day. I just don't trust other boaters.  I might head out in the morning or wait after Labor Day and get back on the water.
I did speak to a local fisherman and stated he's had more hookups with plug cut herring than using a whole herring in the bay.
Anyway good luck to you and see on the water.

Glad to hear the fishing is picking up but sorry about the incidents with the boats. I'm starting my third year of kayak fishing and finally had my first boat incident up in the Cascades a few weeks ago. We had a speeding boat coming straight at us and couldn't see anyone's face in the boat because it was tilted so far up due to the speed. We had our flags and my wife was waving her orange paddle and saying  "don't they see us?"  I was yelling. Literally thought we could die in a few more seconds but they finally must have seen the flags and veered off, not even slowing down. As for the comments, they tend to be the same ones over and over. My favorite one, though , is "That guy in the kayak has one on! (disbelief)".

Fished the Coos today with no success. There were a lot of boats out when i got there, and i saw a couple fish caught. Then it seemed the fish stopped biting and all the boats disappeared. I got the feeling i just missed the morning bite. Ive been getting that feeling a lot lately.

Well if it makes you feel better...... I fished Crescent lake Sunday...... Was so excited just to get my new yak on the water I left my net at camp......long story short.......lost 4 nice browns (due to having forgotten my net) and the one I did get in the yak shook, broke mt line and took off with my lucky lure through the drive hole  >:( So after heading back in and getting my net I did get a nice 20"+ brown but it was a native.......eeerrrrrr...  :angry4:.....oh and the duck was boring

Long day is long. I spent eight hours on the water today. Fish being caught everywhere. I knew it was just a matter of time for me. After about an hour I get my first take down. Fish on! Probably one of the most fun fighting fish I've ever hooked into. A beautiful, chrome bright hen. She looked fat with eggs. She jumped about 12 times. It was awesome! Drag peeling runs started to add up too...then one last graceful leap out of the water into a sweet looking back flip and out pops the hook. I wasn't that upset, it was nice to fight a fish after my dry spell. I forced myself to look on the bright side.
I continued on and more boats were getting lucky. I saw several fish in the 20-30 pound range being netted. I was getting that feeling that something was about to happen so slowed my troll and Bam! The rod buries into the water. I jump up and reach for the rod...the fish is gone :(
I reel in and I'm left with a small piece of the tail end of my herring.
So no labor day weekend love for me.
I'll try my luck again tomorrow.

Thanks for the report, ling. It's good for people to report the slow days too. It's hard man. But at least you're out fishing. I didn't wet a line the whole weekend. Maybe you need a change... fish off the other side of the boat, wear a different hat, eat brownies for breakfast, something. :)

As far as the powerboaters, yeah, well, seems about right. It's kind of an 80/20 rule going on there - 20% of the PBs cause 80% of the problems (probably more like 95/5 really). Glad you talked some smack  >:D  I used to explore new spots on the Columbia just to get away from people.

But like I already said: At least you're out on the water and in the food chain.

After a long weekend of double digit hours spent trolling and a couple failed attempts at some nice fish...I decided to try the evening low tide.
I get geared up and hit the water around 6pm. I shove off into the current and cut my herring and toss my line into the water. I watch the line counter as I drift over 30 FOW. I let my bait hit bottom three times before I decide to start pedaling. A few kicks and I'm looking at a depth of 40ft. I let out a little more line and wait until I feel it touch bottom one more time. I flip the lever on my reel and start heading upstream...about thirty seconds go by and WHAMMY! Fish on! I say out loud 'Are you f@cking kidding me?!' And I start to laugh while I battle the fish. This bankie notices what's going on and  starts cheering me on.
To keep it much shorter than it could be...
I forgot my iron bark shampoo...lucky I had a Next Adventure bottle I scored at ORC. It subdued the buck with one mighty blow. It suffered a small dent but I'm cool with that.
He went 33.5 inches of pure awesome.
I think it's hilarious that I spent so many frustrating hours on the water and then I turn around and land one in less than five minutes on the water.
This is why I fish.  ;D

Great job! Way to keep at it. I'm in your boat when it comes to a dry spell. I have a couple pieces of the puzzle left to solve...

I read somewhere that a lot of guide boats make everyone wash their hands with Lemon scented Joy dish soap before the get on the boat. I bought some Joy yesterday and tried it out...I'm not sure if that really had anything to do with it.  ???
