Depoe Bay report 8/28

Langcod and I started the day at 5 AM and headed for Depoe Bay. We finally hit the water around 8:30. We headed out to the bell and went North. The water was perfect with just a hint of wind. The overcast sky made for cool temperatures. All in all the conditions could not of been better.

I decided to troll a line at the reef just 100 yards from the bell and immediately caught a small ling. The next five hours was a fisherman's dream. The fish were biting on just about anything. By 2:00 I had caught 5 Blacks the largest at 20 inches. 2 lings and a Caby.

Langcod landed a 35 inch Lingcod, a large cabezon and several rockfish. I was a great day to be on the salt.

Awesome! I'm itching for some good bottom fishing and those are solid Rockfish.
Interesting that you caught a Ling trolling...were you targeting something else or is this a technique specifically targeting Ling?  The areas I've caught Ling would not seem conducive to trolling unless you're looking to lose a bunch of tackle...could you elaborate on this technique? What were you trolling and how fast?

I tend to troll very slow about a crank above the bottom along an edge of a shelf. You have to be on the ball to account for rises and drops as you go. On a calm day this technique seems to work extremely well. I had a monster ling to the surface and lost it debating how to get it on the yak. I caught all of the fish on Wednesday trolling.

Way to go guys! I love days like that.
My wife thinks fishing is merely guys wandering around like idiots swinging sticks in the air. Many of my trips prove how smart she really is.

I may be wrong but I think wobblers technique is more like drifting or very very slow trolling not like trolling for Salmon. Hope Steve's well enough to go down Wednesday or Thursday and fish depoe bay together.

This is my preferred method for bottom fishing. I don't lose as much gear this way! That's how I picked up that nice ling at AOTD  ;D

Great report! It's always nice to hear about epic conditions!

Interesting,  two weeks earlier and the bite was not near as good.  Crazy how it changes out there.

I must say it was a very good day and this was the highlight of it for me. A personal best ling coming in at 35 inches and it completed one of my 5 goals for this year.

Thanks Roy.

Yeah, the hook was lodged in the roof of his mouth. I decided to cut the line and retrieve the jig head once he was filleted out.
